Social Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award Ceremony

Alumni are invited to celebrate the achievements of philanthropist and progressive political activist Drummond Pike, winner of the 2016 Social Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award.

Since graduating from Stevenson College in 1970 with a degree in politics, Pike has founded a number of organizations that promote and fund progressive causes. He started the Tides Foundation in 1976, the first fully staffed donor-advised fund in the U.S. and served as its president until his retirement in 2010. Since its inception, the Tides Foundation has administered more than $1 billion in grants to progressive organizations and causes.

He co-founded Working Assets, now called Credo, a telecommunications company based in San Francisco that supports social justice. He also founded Highwater, Inc., a real estate development venture designed to provide quality nonprofit workspace in metropolitan areas, and in 1996 started the Tides Center, which provides grants and administrative services to charitable initiatives that have yet to incorporate with non-profit status.

Since 2011, he has been a principal with Equilibrium Capital Group, a private equity investing firm based in Portland, Oregon.

This Award is presented annually to a graduate whose career is characterized by sustained and exemplary contributions to society through research, practice, education, policy, or service. The award winners bring enduring honor to their alma mater as practitioners and as citizens.
