SUMMARY:2026 Graduate & Professional School Fair
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join us\, open to all majors! \nUndergraduate and graduate students and recent alumni interested in pursuing continuing education opportunities are invited to attend. Get the chance to meet admission representatives seeking to share insight into their respective graduate and professional school programs and discuss ways in which to stand out in the application process. \nCurious about how to best prepare for the fair? \n1. Research the organization\nIdentify your top 3-5 graduate and professional schools you’re interested in (but be sure to stay open to engaging with multiple programs at the event). Do your research by reviewing school websites (what’s the graduate program mission? values?)\, admissions process and requirements\, and perhaps check out their social media for the latest news from the university/school. Graduate and professional school representatives are impressed by potential candidates who take the time to do this!\n \n2. Prepare your introduction and questions\nReflect on what about each program resonates with you. Perhaps it’s the specific the curriculum they’re developing\, research they’re leading\, or the career path a specific degree program can lead you on. What relevant experiences do you have? How can you be of service to the graduate or professional school? Exercise critical thinking skills to develop questions to ask recruiters. \n3. Plan your time\nBe sure to manage the time you have to ensure you’re able to connect with the graduate and professional school programs you’re most interested in\, but remember to also be open to different schools you may not have heard of because they may be a smaller or out of area graduate or professional school program. \nYou Belong Here: The programs and services described here are open to all\, consistent with state and federal law\, as well as the University of California’s nondiscrimination policies. Every initiative—whether a student service\, faculty program\, or community event—is designed to be accessible\, inclusive\, and respectful of all identities. \nTo learn more\, please visit UC Nondiscrimination Statement or Nondiscrimination Policy for UC Publications. \nPLEASE NOTE: You are encouraged to check in at the student registration table in order to participate in the career fair. Bring your student ID. \nWant more support? \n\nVisit a peer coach during drop-in hours\nSchedule a career coaching appointment with a Career Engagement Specialist\nFor PhD students looking to pursue careers in industry\, explore Beyond the Professoriate\n(Scroll over “Login to Platform” at the top navigation bar and click “Through your institution”)\nGet career tips on demand from our Career Success YouTube video library\nStay in the loop by following Career Success on Instagram\, Facebook\, and Twitter\n\nYou will receive registration and additional information to your email from Career Success via Handshake. SUMMARY:Carlos Motta: When Time Stands Still
DESCRIPTION:Carlos Motta’s When Time Stands Still\, the artist’s second solo show with the IAS\, features new and recent installations\, videos\, and sculptures highlighting the artist’s preoccupation with the historical and aesthetic productions of difference and marginalization that shape the present. \nThe selection of artworks in the exhibition explore the unsettling experience of living in a time that seems violently stuck on repeat. Archetypal figures from art history (a fool\, a siren\, a witness\, a victim) reappear in the current moment as containers of time\, bringing the past of imperialism\, colonization\, and displacement into a present marked by the rise of anti-immigration politics\, climate injustice\, and other forms of disposability. Some works challenge this violent repetition of time. The clock moves\, if gruelingly\, in an endurance-based video performance\, No One\, 2025. For forty-six minutes\, the artist undertakes to keep his eyes open\, witnessing\, withstanding\, confronting\, and resisting the bombardment of images\, both historical and otherwise\, that normalize harm. In another video work\, Gravity\, 2024\, performers enact rescue carries\, supporting each other until they can’t bear the weight. Together\, the artworks act as a proposal about how to rethink time—how to slow time—with a poetic and aesthetic cadence that might counter the numbing reverberations of living in the present. \nWhen Time Stands Still is organized as part of Visualizing Abolition\, an arts-based initiative that reaches across prison borders to create a future free of prisons. \n\n\n\nCarlos Motta (b. 1978\, Colombia) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been shown widely nationally and internationally. Solo exhibitions venues include the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Nikolaj Kunsthal\, Copenhagen; Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá; Wexner Center for the Arts\, Columbus\, OH ; Röda Sten Konsthall\, Gothenburg\, Sweden; Galeria Vermelho\, São Paulo; Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM); Tate Modern\, London; and New Museum\, New York (2012). He has also participated in major biennials\, including the Venice Biennale; Berlin Biennale; Bienal de São Paulo; and the Gwangju Biennale. Motta is Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Art\, Fine Arts Department\, Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Victor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez: Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá
DESCRIPTION:Organized in partnership with the Center for Art and Advocacy\, located in Brooklyn\, New York\, Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá (Not From Here\, Not From There) by multidisciplinary artist Victor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez features a wide range of artworks  that issue a bold declaration of dual belonging\, including altars\, an elaborately immersive botanica\, paintings referencing visual symbolism drawn from textiles\, graffiti and community traditions\, and\, in a series called I.C.E. Scream\, large\, brightly colored resin sculptures in the shape of melting Mexican paletas (popsicles). As the exhibition title suggests (a phrase widely used in bilingual and bicultural communities)\, these artworks reflect the artist’s interest in the experience of living between worlds even as violent notions of nationalism and identity pervade.  \nAccompanying the exhibition\, Elevar la Cultura\, an immersive sculptural installation featuring a twenty-two-foot-tall pyramid built from ice coolers adorned with ancestral textiles\, sacred symbols\, and mural work will be on view at Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos (1817 Soquel) November 7\, 2026- March 7\, 2027. As Quiñonez explains\, this sculpture epitomizes the contradictions of living—and laboring—as an immigrant in the United States:  \n “Most people see the cooler as a tool for leisure…for barbecues\, tailgating\, and celebrations. But for immigrant communities\, the cooler is a tool and symbol for opportunity and independence. In every major city\, you see families and vendors selling fruit\, food\, and water out of these coolers on the streets and in subway stations. They’re a necessity for survival and a way to start an honest living\,” the artist shares. \nThe Institute of Arts and Sciences will be the second venue to successfully present Ni de Aquí\, Ni de Allá to the public. First organized by Boston University Art Galleries and curated by Kate Fowle in September of 2025\, the exhibition debuted to critical acclaim before gaining national attention after its abrupt removal from its second venue\, the University of North Texas\, where it had been installed just one week prior to it being censored.  \nVictor ‘Marka27’ Quiñonez is a renowned international visual artist who is known for his diverse works that intersect contemporary art\, graffiti\, vinyl toys\, fashion and design and art activism. Quiñonez has exhibited globally and collaborated with major brands while creating landmark public art in cities across the U.S. He is a Frieze Los Angeles Impact Prize winner (2025) and a Right of Return and Art for Justice Fellow (2023\, 2024).

SUMMARY:The science of life in the neighborhood—and beyond
DESCRIPTION:UC Santa Cruz is bringing Science in the Neighborhood to South County! Join us for our first event in Aptos.\nAre we alone in the universe? Answering that question begins surprisingly close to home. Earth has been many different planets over its long history\, offering clues about how life begins\, evolves\, and ultimately transforms the world around it.  Beyond Earth\, the question leads us to the icy moons of the solar system where hidden oceans may harbor environments suitable for life. And if alien moons weren’t enticing enough\, the galaxy beckons with billions of planets orbiting other stars. For the first time in human history\, we are developing tools that could search nearby worlds for signs of life. Connecting these questions—how life begins and where else we might find it—is the science of astrobiology. In this talk\, we’ll explore these questions and meet the researchers at UC Santa Cruz turning age-old speculation about alien life into a scientific search for evidence. \n  \nNatalie Batalha is a professor of astronomy & astrophysics and the director of the Santa Cruz Center for Astrobiology\, which aims to advance interdisciplinary research and academic opportunities focused on the origin\, evolution\, and distribution of life in the universe. \nThe presentation will be followed by a live Q&A. Free and open to the public. The event is in-person only.  \nRegister to attend. \nLocation:\nCommunity Foundation Santa Cruz County\n7807 Soquel Dr\, Aptos\, CA 95003 \nParking and capacity:\nArrive early for best seating. Seating is available for 50 guests\, with additional standing room. Carpooling is recommended\, as there are only 30 parking spaces in the main lot. Overflow parking is available at the Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center across the street. \n  \nScience In the Neighborhood is a public lecture series hosted quarterly by the UC Santa Cruz Science Division.\nJoin the mailing list to be notified about upcoming Science in the Neighborhood speakers\, dates\, and event details.
