SUMMARY:Festival of Monsters: Academic Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Festival of Monsters Academic Conference (Oct. 14-18\, 2026) explores how monsters and language intertwine with panels on monsters and communication\, cursed texts\, monster poetry and more. Monster-related games will be played. Comics writer Iván Brandon and bioethicist author Rosemarie Garland Thomson  are scheduled to give the keynote talks. \nThe academic conference will take place at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel (313 Riverside Ave\, Santa Cruz\, CA 950603) near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. There will be additional public events on Wednesday\, Oct. 14 and Saturday\, Oct. 17\, in downtown Santa Cruz. The Festival is sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Center for Monster Studies. \nCurrent UC Santa Cruz students\, staff and faculty may attend the conference for free. DESCRIPTION:CruzCon brings together UC researchers\, faculty\, students\, campus leadership\, and industry partners for a day exploring open source in research and innovation — hosted by the UC Santa Cruz Open Source Program Office (CROSS) and CITRIS and the Banatao Institute at the Seymour Center\, UC Santa Cruz. \nRegistration Open\nPlease note that is not an open event as space is limited. It is meant primarily for UC affiliates\, industry partners and invited guests. If you are an external participant who has not received a direct invitation please email cross-info@ucsc.edu to request one before registering. \nAttendees are also invited to join the CROSS Annual Oktoberfest\, held immediately following the conference.
