DESCRIPTION:NOIZ: An Evening of Words\, Sounds + Ideas is a live gathering at the intersection of Hip Hop\, activism\, and the spoken word—a space where music meets testimony. Hosted by assistant professor and hip hop artist akua naru\, the evening features live student performances\, a DJ set\, and an intimate conversation with guest artist/performer Edd Wheeler: pioneering Brazilian rapper\, founding member of As Damas do Rap\, the first female Hip Hop group in Rio de Janeiro\, and practicing lawyer and organizer whose life and work embody the transformative power of the emcee as witness\, visionary\, and change agent. Wheeler is joined with collaborators akua naru\, spoken-word poet and musician Azmera Hammouri-Davis\, and a student ensemble led by Ananya Balagere and Romare Uyeda-Hale. SUMMARY:Arts & Ecology Festival: Creative Resistance
DESCRIPTION:On Earth Day\, UC Santa Cruz launches the inaugural Arts & Ecology Festival: Creative Resistance\, a campus-wide gathering that refuses to treat climate change as a problem of carbon alone. Instead\, it brings together artists\, scientists\, students\, and community partners to engage the deeper conditions of the crisis\, and to open space for cultural\, political\, and imaginative transformations grounded in repair\, reciprocity\, and collective futures. \nTaking place at the Digital Arts Research Center (DARC)\, the festival unfolds as a full day of exhibitions\, film screenings\, performances\, workshops\, talks\, and public engagement. Developed through an open call that drew an overwhelming response across disciplines\, the program reflects a growing field of practitioners working across environmental research\, land-based knowledge\, climate resistance\, and practices of repair that move beyond dominant institutional and economic frameworks. DESCRIPTION:The third annual Slug48 returns with a 48-hour film competition—open to all UC Santa Cruz students. A 48-hour film is one that is written\, shot\, edited\, and all music composed within a 48-hour time period. Teams and strategies for filming may be formed ahead of time\, but nothing can be written\, and no footage can be shot\, until the clock is ticking. DESCRIPTION:For over 20 years\, The Lionel Cantú Queer Resource Center has proudly honored the accomplishments of graduating students at UCSC.  At the annual Lavender Graduation Celebration\, graduates of all academic levels and programs are celebrated in a uniquely queer way.   Graduating students receive a lavender or rainbow stole in addition to enjoying refreshments\, music\, and student speakers. \n\nRegister to attend the celebration (or to reserve a stole to pick up after).\n\nNominate a student speaker.\n\nLav Grad 2026 will take place on May 31\, 2026 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the Cowell Ranch Gay Barn.   Friends and family are invited to cheer on graduates. \n\nYou Belong Here: The programs and services described here are open to all\, consistent with state and federal law\, as well as the University of California’s nondiscrimination policies. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on June 24\, 2026\, at 5:30 pm at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego\, for a special reception with UC Santa Cruz Nobel Laureate Carol Greider and members of the UCSC Department of Molecular\, Cell and Developmental Biology faculty. \nCarol won the Nobel Prize in 2009 for discovering how the tips of our chromosomes — called telomeres — protect the DNA inside our cells. Think of telomeres like the plastic caps on shoelaces that keep them from fraying. She also discovered telomerase\, the enzyme that rebuilds these caps as our cells divide. Her work has transformed how scientists understand aging\, cancer\, and what keeps our cells healthy over a lifetime. \nThis event is open to all UC Santa Cruz Alumni\, San Diego area supporters\, and interested industry representatives in town for the BIO International Convention. \nRSVP Today!
