SUMMARY:Lineages of Workers Inquiry in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:The 1970s saw a burst of working-class struggle in the United States. In a moment of crisis\, workers responded with courage and determination to fight back. A wave of strikes and rank-and-file rebellion led a number of feminist scholars and activists to investigate\, contextualize\, and broadcast this activity. Some engaged in oral history\, others in participant observation by obtaining jobs in different industries. They asked crucial questions about what the meaning of class relationships\, the connection between historical memory and ongoing struggles\, and the significance of social reproduction in analyzing exploitation and resistance. \nIn our present\, as younger generations enter the labor movement through union drives\, salting\, strike support\, and other paths\, this body of research and action offers valuable lessons.

SUMMARY:Taking Charge of Change: Five Fundamental Truths for Mastering the Chaos of Life
DESCRIPTION:Taking Charge of Change: Five Fundamental Truths for Mastering the Chaos of Life With Jim Hjort \nWednesday\, Oct. 21\, 2026 | Noon PT \nVirtual via Zoom \nHosted by the UCLA Alumni Association\, open to all UC alumni \nChange is the only constant in life\, and every day we are called to reckon with this. Today\, it may be most apparent to you in national or global tumult\, a career pivot you’re contemplating\, or relationship dynamics you’re struggling to tweak or adapt to. \nHowever it shows up\, you can count on the rug continuing to shift beneath your feet. And your brain really doesn’t like that\, at least by default. In its frenzy to find stability today\, it will leap to ways of thinking and behaving that will leave you feeling even more stuck\, stifled\, and afraid tomorrow. Yet\, if you are inclined toward personal growth\, you can use the tidal forces of change to propel you to ever-greater wisdom\, inner stability\, and even growth. \nLEARN MORE & REGISTER

SUMMARY:Film Screening with Isaac Julien - Young Soul Rebels
DESCRIPTION:Join the Humanities Institute\, the Moving Image Lab\, and the Quarry Amphitheater for a screening of Isaac Julien’s 1991 film\, Young Soul Rebels. Recently restored to its original director’s cut\, the film is a coming-of-age thriller set in London in 1977\, the year of the Sex Pistols’ debut and Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee. It follows two teenage best friends\, Chris and Caz\, who operate a pirate radio station\, the Soul Patrol\, and centers on the race conflicts and tensions among three popular youth movements at the time–skinheads\, punks\, and soulboys. Julien’s first feature\, the film won the Semaine de la Critique prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and has garnered international acclaim since its release. Its soundtrack includes music by Parliament\, The O’Jays\, War\, and Roy Ayers\, among others. \n \nThe event will begin with a brief presentation on the film’s context. The film will be followed by a Q&A with writer and director\, Isaac Julien. \nFree and open to the public. Registration required. \nFilmmaker and installation artist\, Isaac Julien KBE RA\, was born in 1960 in London. His work breaks down the barriers between different artistic disciplines\, drawing from and commenting on film\, dance\, photography\, music\, theatre\, painting\, and sculpture\, and uniting them to construct powerful visual narratives through multi-screen film installations. \nHis latest work All That Changes You. Metamorphosis is an immersive ten-screen installation that opened in October 2024 at the Palazo Te in Mantua\, Italy and features internationally celebrated actors Sheila Atim and Gwendoline Christie. A five-screen version of the installation will have its world premiere at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London in February 2026\, and it will be featured at Santa Cruz’s Museum of Art and History in Fall 2027. Other recent solo exhibitions include Isaac Julien: I Dream a World at the de Young Museum in San Francisco (2025)\, Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement at MASP in São Paulo (2025)\, Lessons of the Hour at MoMA in New York (2024)\, and Once Again… (Statues Never Die) at the Whitney Biennial (2024). \nIn 2018\, Julien joined the faculty at UC Santa Cruz where he is Distinguished Professor of the Arts and Humanities and leads the Moving Image Lab together with History of Consciousness Professor Emeritus\, Mark Nash. Julien is the 2017 recipient of The Royal Academy of Arts Charles Wollaston Award\, and he was awarded a Kaiserring Goslar Award in 2022 and granted a knighthood as part of the Queen’s Honours List in 2022. \nThis event is presented by the Humanities Institute and the Moving Image Lab\, and co-sponsored by Crown College\, Merrill College\, Porter College\, and the Quarry Amphitheater.

SUMMARY:Reshaping representation: Midterm elections and emerging district map battles
DESCRIPTION:Congressional elections are central to American democratic representation. Their importance underpins recent concerns about partisan gerrymandering in the states and makes civic participation even more critical given the narrow majorities in Congress. Indeed\, the outcome of congressional elections has significant consequences for whose voices are reflected in state and federal policymaking\, especially when both parties have used redistricting strategically to improve their electoral prospects. In advance of the 2026 midterm elections\, this event will contextualize past redistricting efforts and explore some of the most pressing threats to today’s electoral process. Our panel will discuss the long history of redistricting in the United States\, differentiate between racial gerrymandering and partisan gerrymandering\, discuss the intersection of race and partisan objectives\, highlight the role of recent state independent redistricting commissions and California’s Prop 50\, along with exclusionary changes to the Voting Rights Act and recent actions taken by the Supreme Court. You will not want to miss this informative discussion as you prepare to participate in these important elections. \nThis event is the first in a series of 2026-27 Resilient Democracy events brought to you by the Institute for Social Transformation. \nFree and open to the public with registration: RSVP HERE to attend in-person or virtually. Questions? Contact transform@ucsc.edu. \nModerator \n\nMelanie Springer\, Associate Professor of Politics (UC Santa Cruz)\n\nPanelists \n\nSonal Shah\, Board Chair of Consumer Reports and Senior Advisor for Results Prism Advisory\nElspeth Wilson\, Assistant Teaching Professor in Politics/Legal Studies (UC Santa Cruz)\nErik J. Engstrom\, Professor of Political Science (UC Davis)\n\nStudent Q&A Moderators \n\nAngela Navarro\, double major in Legal Studies and Politics (Stevenson College ’28). Nidhi interned with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage this past spring and summer and participated in the UC Washington DC (UCDC) Program.\n\nCo-sponsored by: UC Santa Cruz Institute for Social Transformation\, Politics Department\, Legal Studies Program\, Chancellor’s Office\, Merrill College\, Office for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, and The Humanities Institute. \nRegister to vote! SUMMARY:A Discussion and Reading with Fady Joudah – Exhibit G: Poems\, Essays\, and Photographs of Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Join the Center for the Middle East and North Africa for a reading and talk with award-winning poet and translator Fady Joudah. \nIn Exhibit G: Fady Joudah writes from the split perspective of a Palestinian American physician caring for the sick while watching the destruction of Gaza from the United States\, a nation complicit in that destruction. He locates the paradox of his position everywhere: in the seed a sparrow eats from his proffered hand; in his writing in English\, the oppressor’s language; in the faces of Palestinian children receiving meals from aid kitchens—a glimpse into what his life could have been\, and what is being lost in a war disproportionately impacting children and their families. Throughout the book\, beauty insists on its survival not only through the Palestinian people\, but also through the nonhuman world in which he takes occasional refuge from the devastation that humanity brings upon itself. \n \nFady Joudah is the author of […] (2024)\, a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize\, and Exhibit G (2026). His other poetic works include: The Earth in the Attic (2008) ; Alight (2013); Textu (2014)\, a book-long sequence of short poems whose meter is based on cellphone character count; Footnotes in the Order of Disappearance (2018); and Tethered to Stars (2021). He has translated several collections of poetry from the Arabic and is the co-editor and co-founder of the Etel Adnan Poetry Prize. He was a winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition and has received the Jackson Poetry Prize\, a PEN award\, a Banipal/Times Literary Supplement prize from the UK\, the Griffin Poetry Prize\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and the Arab American Book Award. He lives in Houston with his wife and kids where he practices internal medicine. \nPresented by the Center for the Middle East and North Africa and co-sponsored by the Humanities Institute\, the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation Presidential Chair in Feminist Studies\, and Possibilities of Palestinian Refusal.

SUMMARY:The science of life in the neighborhood—and beyond
DESCRIPTION:UC Santa Cruz is bringing Science in the Neighborhood to South County! Join us for our first event in Aptos.\nAre we alone in the universe? Answering that question begins surprisingly close to home. Earth has been many different planets over its long history\, offering clues about how life begins\, evolves\, and ultimately transforms the world around it.  Beyond Earth\, the question leads us to the icy moons of the solar system where hidden oceans may harbor environments suitable for life. And if alien moons weren’t enticing enough\, the galaxy beckons with billions of planets orbiting other stars. For the first time in human history\, we are developing tools that could search nearby worlds for signs of life. Connecting these questions—how life begins and where else we might find it—is the science of astrobiology. In this talk\, we’ll explore these questions and meet the researchers at UC Santa Cruz turning age-old speculation about alien life into a scientific search for evidence. \n  \nNatalie Batalha is a professor of astronomy & astrophysics and the director of the Santa Cruz Center for Astrobiology\, which aims to advance interdisciplinary research and academic opportunities focused on the origin\, evolution\, and distribution of life in the universe. \nThe presentation will be followed by a live Q&A. Free and open to the public. The event is in-person only.  \nRegister to attend. \nLocation:\nSanta Cruz County Communication Foundation\n7807 Soquel Dr\, Aptos\, CA 95003 \nParking and capacity:\nArrive early for best seating. Seating is available for 50 guests\, with additional standing room. Carpooling is recommended\, as there are only 30 parking spaces in the main lot. Overflow parking is available at the Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center across the street. \n  \nScience In the Neighborhood is a public lecture series hosted quarterly by the UC Santa Cruz Science Division.\nJoin the mailing list to be notified about upcoming Science in the Neighborhood speakers\, dates\, and event details.

SUMMARY:Environmental Studies Seminar Series | Edible Insects and the Future of Food: Capitalist Dreams\, Loss\, and Everyday Immigrant Practices
DESCRIPTION:In person and via Zoom (Meeting ID: 978 5545 8946\, Passcode: 454736).  \nIf you are unable to stream the talk live and need to access a recorded version\, please contact Stacy Philpott at sphilpot@ucsc.edu. A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Stacy Philpott \nSpeaker: Paolina Hwae Kyung Kao Yook Lu\, UC Davis \nTitle: Edible Insects and the Future of Food: Capitalist Dreams\, Loss\, and Everyday Immigrant Practices \nAbstract: In the 2010s\, edible insects emerged in popular discourse as a potential “food of the future.” Drawing on fieldwork and interviews conducted in the United States from 2019-2024 with entrepreneurs\, farmers\, and food producers\, this talk traces how insects became a hopeful response to anxieties about ecological crisis\, food security\, and changing ways of life. I bring one Southeast Asian American family’s enduring practice of foraging for grasshoppers into conversation with the emergence and transformation of the insect agriculture industry. Doing so reveals two distinct relationships to insects: one shaped by the anticipation of future loss and the desire to secure against it\, the other by losses already lived through displacement and relocation. Attending to these differences while listening for what they share\, the talk asks what an affective throughline of loss can reveal about the ways people imagine futures\, develop relationships with other forms of life\, and work to make and sustain lives through food. \n

SUMMARY:AM Seminar: Sliced Optimal Transport: From Acceleration to Bayesian Modeling
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Enter the speaker’s name\, title\, and institution at the top of the event \nDescription: Optimal transport (OT) provides a principled way to match\, compare\, and interpolate distributions\, but its computational cost limits its use at realistic scales. I will present our recent work on reducing that cost and on using OT for statistical modeling and inference. In the first part of the talk\, I will briefly introduce optimal transport and sliced optimal transport (SOT). I will then present sliced-regularized OT\, which uses a cheap sliced plan as an informative prior for approximating the full plan\, yielding an efficient approximate OT solver. In the second part\, I will show how SOT enables new applications in statistical inference. In particular\, I will introduce distributional determinantal point processes\, which use SOT geometry to place repulsive priors on distributions\, giving a Bayesian model for clustering distributional data. Applications include image processing and the clustering of single-cell and epilepsy data. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Khai Nguyen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Texas at Austin and his B.Sc. in Computer Science from Hanoi University of Science and Technology. His research develops computational optimal transport\, particularly sliced methods that make large-scale transport tractable. He brings these tools to problems in machine learning and geometric data processing\, as well as to Bayesian approximate inference and nonparametric models for distributional data. \nThis seminar is hosted by Professor Yunyi Shen.
