SUMMARY:Road Trip! Light in the American West\, from Baja to the Yukon
DESCRIPTION:The photographs in this exhibition\, made between 2004 and 2025\, span across the American West from the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico to The Yukon territory in Canada. Paul Schoellhamer’s (Cowell ‘69) color photographs invite us to travel with him and reflect on our relationship to land\, the light that shapes it\, and the freedom – contested but essential – to move across it. \nThe exhibition draws on voices across time and perspective that frame the American landscape as more than a stage for beauty and awe. For Chief Satanta of the Kiowa Nation\, to roam the land freely was life itself. For N. Scott Momaday\, land must be “believed to be seen.” For Eliot Porter\, light and reflection imparted magic to Glen Canyon’s waters. For Wallace Stegner\, saving natural places meant saving fragments of our collective sanity. For Brook M. Thompson\, the Klamath River is recognized with personhood. Alongside these perspectives\, Paul’s images press us to see public land not as scenery to extract or aestheticize\, but as sustenance and history. Land is alive and contested. To see closely is not to linger on a romanticized vision of the American landscape\, but to reckon with responsibility: how we safeguard access\, how we imagine “wildness\,” and how we hold space for futures beyond our own. SUMMARY:Creative Interventions: Catherine Provenzano
DESCRIPTION:Since the shift to predominantly digital audio recording\, manufacturers of software tools have stepped in claiming to make production work faster and easier while unlocking the artist/producer’s creative potential. In 2016\, artist Justin Bieber explained to the New York Times Magazine that the way producers Diplo and Skrillex were able to manipulate Ableton on his hit Where Are Ü Now resulted in what he affirmatively coined as “expensive-sounding sounds.” More recent messaging around sounds that “stand out” is surging as most major music software outfits roll out new AI tools meant to do everything from automate the engineer’s vocal chain to help the artist quickly find and tailor samples. \nRefusing to take these claims at face value\, this talk will consider several songs\, advertisements\, and demonstration videos from the last 25 years and ask\, what makes a technology “creative” in practice? DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about careers in education or nonprofits? Join this job talk with UCSC Humanities alum Kristen Amicone\, a doctoral student with expertise in nonprofits\, educational programming\, and leadership. Kristen will share insights from her academic and professional experience\, from being a transfer student\, to making career transition decisions\, to navigating an online graduate school program. \nLearn more about Kristen: \nKristen Amicone is a UCSC Feminist Studies and Kresge alumna and a lifelong Californian. Growing up in the Inland Empire\, she moved to Santa Cruz to attend UCSC and then to San Diego for her first stint in grad school at SDSU. After working in the nonprofit sector for 15 years\, she made the jump to education/government work with the San Diego County Office of Education. Kristen specializes in employee/volunteer engagement and educational programming. She returned to school in 2022\, earning her MSNPA from Louisiana State University\, Shreveport (LSUS) in 2023 before applying for and getting accepted to the EdD program at the same institution. Her research interests include employee engagement\, change confidence\, and leadership. She lives in La Mesa\, a small town right outside San Diego\, and enjoys theatre\, movies\, and horror novels.

SUMMARY:Yoga as Healing Series
DESCRIPTION:Yoga as Healing is an offering for students at UC Santa Cruz who identify as survivors of interpersonal violence. Together\, we will practice gentle body movement\, breathwork\, meditation\, and more—all from a trauma-informed lens. \nThis 7-week program is limited to 8–10 participants in each cohort and is intended to provide a safe and predictable environment for survivors to build community. \nAt the beginning of each session\, participants will have time to share their progress and personal experiences with the class. This will be followed by asana practice (physical postures)\, and the class will close with journaling\, art\, and reflection. \nCARE will provide yoga mats\, blocks\, and a blanket for each participant. You are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle for hydration. \nParticipants are welcome to join Yoga as Healing for any of the sessions; attendance at the orientation is not required. The sessions run from October 7 through November 25\, with no session on November 11. \nThis event is open to all UC Santa Cruz students. Fill out an interest form to sign up.

SUMMARY:Road Trip! Light in the American West\, from Baja to the Yukon
DESCRIPTION:The photographs in this exhibition\, made between 2004 and 2025\, span across the American West from the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico to The Yukon territory in Canada. Paul Schoellhamer’s (Cowell ‘69) color photographs invite us to travel with him and reflect on our relationship to land\, the light that shapes it\, and the freedom – contested but essential – to move across it. \nThe exhibition draws on voices across time and perspective that frame the American landscape as more than a stage for beauty and awe. For Chief Satanta of the Kiowa Nation\, to roam the land freely was life itself. For N. Scott Momaday\, land must be “believed to be seen.” For Eliot Porter\, light and reflection imparted magic to Glen Canyon’s waters. For Wallace Stegner\, saving natural places meant saving fragments of our collective sanity. For Brook M. Thompson\, the Klamath River is recognized with personhood. Alongside these perspectives\, Paul’s images press us to see public land not as scenery to extract or aestheticize\, but as sustenance and history. Land is alive and contested. To see closely is not to linger on a romanticized vision of the American landscape\, but to reckon with responsibility: how we safeguard access\, how we imagine “wildness\,” and how we hold space for futures beyond our own. DESCRIPTION:Race and the European Fairy Tale: The Making of a White Genre \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Kimberly Lau offers intertwined readings of several cognate fairy tales that revolve around true and false brides\, beginning with Black slaves and white fairies in 17th-century Naples and tracing their evolution into (implicitly raced but unmarked) kind and unkind girls in 19th-century Germany. Through her readings\, Lau illustrates some of the ways that culturally specific\, historical ideas about race\, racial thinking\, and racism have contributed to the development of the European fairy tale as a genre as well as to the creation of the fairy tale’s enduringly white world.

SUMMARY:Orientation to Community Archiving
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the importance of preserving and documenting the history and culture of our community through archiving. \nWe will discuss how the rise of interest in Community Archives has transformed the way collective memories are curated\, capturing forgotten and suppressed voices\, reshaping our understanding of what archives are and how they function\, and challenging long-held assumptions about the role of professionals in mediating and sharing history. \nThe presenter\, Rebecca Hernandez\, is currently the inaugural Community Archivist at the UC Santa Cruz University Library\, where she collaborates with community members to preserve the rich history and cultural heritage of Santa Cruz County. Her academic background includes a PhD in American Studies\, MA in American Indian Studies\, and an MFA in Design. \nThis is a hybrid event\, with some space available in Humanities 2-259\, and a virtual option available. SUMMARY:Road Trip! Light in the American West\, from Baja to the Yukon
DESCRIPTION:The photographs in this exhibition\, made between 2004 and 2025\, span across the American West from the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico to The Yukon territory in Canada. Paul Schoellhamer’s (Cowell ‘69) color photographs invite us to travel with him and reflect on our relationship to land\, the light that shapes it\, and the freedom – contested but essential – to move across it. \nThe exhibition draws on voices across time and perspective that frame the American landscape as more than a stage for beauty and awe. For Chief Satanta of the Kiowa Nation\, to roam the land freely was life itself. For N. Scott Momaday\, land must be “believed to be seen.” For Eliot Porter\, light and reflection imparted magic to Glen Canyon’s waters. For Wallace Stegner\, saving natural places meant saving fragments of our collective sanity. For Brook M. Thompson\, the Klamath River is recognized with personhood. Alongside these perspectives\, Paul’s images press us to see public land not as scenery to extract or aestheticize\, but as sustenance and history. Land is alive and contested. To see closely is not to linger on a romanticized vision of the American landscape\, but to reckon with responsibility: how we safeguard access\, how we imagine “wildness\,” and how we hold space for futures beyond our own. For Paul\, this exhibition is a call for students to encounter land and light firsthand and let those encounters be their teachers. \nOpening Reception\nOctober 4\, 2025\n1-4pm \n—– \nJoin us every Friday for Art Fridays.\nNo experience necessary. SUMMARY:La Bienvenida: Lucha\, Fuerza\, y Esperanza
DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, El Centro has hosted La Bienvenida as a way to foster belonging for Chicanx\, Latine\, and multiracial students. This year\, Bienvenida expands into a two-day welcome series designed to introduce and connect new and returning students with El Centro\, Chicanx and Latine student organizations\, and the broader UCSC community. \nRooted in the theme “Lucha\, Fuerza y Esperanza\,” the celebration will feature Ritmo de Nuestras Culturas\, a baile on Saturday\, October 11\, 2025\, followed by Dominguero: Prosperando en Comunidad\, a more intimate carne asada–style gathering on Sunday\, October 12\, 2025. \nThrough music\, food\, storytelling\, and intentional relationship-building\, Bienvenida cultivates comunidad while honoring El Centro’s mission of affirming Chicanx and Latine communities. This series offers meaningful opportunities for students to connect with peers and cultural resources that will support their academic\, social\, and personal journeys at UC Santa Cruz.
