SUMMARY:Environmental Studies Seminar Series | Edible Insects and the Future of Food: Capitalist Dreams\, Loss\, and Everyday Immigrant Practices
DESCRIPTION:In person and via Zoom (Meeting ID: 978 5545 8946\, Passcode: 454736).  \nIf you are unable to stream the talk live and need to access a recorded version\, please contact Stacy Philpott at sphilpot@ucsc.edu. A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Stacy Philpott \nSpeaker: Paolina Hwae Kyung Kao Yook Lu\, UC Davis \nTitle: Edible Insects and the Future of Food: Capitalist Dreams\, Loss\, and Everyday Immigrant Practices \nAbstract: In the 2010s\, edible insects emerged in popular discourse as a potential “food of the future.” Drawing on fieldwork and interviews conducted in the United States from 2019-2024 with entrepreneurs\, farmers\, and food producers\, this talk traces how insects became a hopeful response to anxieties about ecological crisis\, food security\, and changing ways of life. I bring one Southeast Asian American family’s enduring practice of foraging for grasshoppers into conversation with the emergence and transformation of the insect agriculture industry. Doing so reveals two distinct relationships to insects: one shaped by the anticipation of future loss and the desire to secure against it\, the other by losses already lived through displacement and relocation. Attending to these differences while listening for what they share\, the talk asks what an affective throughline of loss can reveal about the ways people imagine futures\, develop relationships with other forms of life\, and work to make and sustain lives through food. \n

SUMMARY:AM Seminar: Sliced Optimal Transport: From Acceleration to Bayesian Modeling
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Enter the speaker’s name\, title\, and institution at the top of the event \nDescription: Optimal transport (OT) provides a principled way to match\, compare\, and interpolate distributions\, but its computational cost limits its use at realistic scales. I will present our recent work on reducing that cost and on using OT for statistical modeling and inference. In the first part of the talk\, I will briefly introduce optimal transport and sliced optimal transport (SOT). I will then present sliced-regularized OT\, which uses a cheap sliced plan as an informative prior for approximating the full plan\, yielding an efficient approximate OT solver. In the second part\, I will show how SOT enables new applications in statistical inference. In particular\, I will introduce distributional determinantal point processes\, which use SOT geometry to place repulsive priors on distributions\, giving a Bayesian model for clustering distributional data. Applications include image processing and the clustering of single-cell and epilepsy data. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Khai Nguyen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Texas at Austin and his B.Sc. in Computer Science from Hanoi University of Science and Technology. His research develops computational optimal transport\, particularly sliced methods that make large-scale transport tractable. He brings these tools to problems in machine learning and geometric data processing\, as well as to Bayesian approximate inference and nonparametric models for distributional data. \nThis seminar is hosted by Professor Yunyi Shen.

SUMMARY:Reckoning with Redress: The Legacy of Japanese American Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Forty-five years ago\, survivors and descendants of the WWII Japanese American incarceration\, testified before the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) — helping set in motion what would become one of the largest reparations efforts in U.S. history. This year’s Peggy Downes Baskin Ethics Lecture marks the 45th anniversary of the 1981 CWRIC hearings and will feature the public launch of Reckoning with Redress — a new cinematic digital history project\, along with the lecture “A Debt Owed–Korematsu\, Reparations\, and the Ever-Recycling Racial Pathology of 1619\,” given by Donald Tamaki. \n \nDoors will open for light refreshments at 5:30pm. Program begins at 6:00pm. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is first come\, first served. \nParking Information \nThe Cultural Center Merrill College is located in Merrill College\, in the northeast corner of the campus core. Those walking or arriving by Metro bus or campus shuttle can take the steep path heading northeast from the Crown/Merrill bus stop. \nFor those driving from the Main Entrance\, stay on Coolidge Drive. Shortly after Coolidge turns left and becomes McLaughlin Drive\, turn right at the sign for Merrill College. At the top of the hill\, veer right. There is parking for “A\,” “B\,” and “C” permits along the right. Parking is provided free of charge courtesy of the Humanities Division. There are two accessible parking spaces if you turn left at the top of the hill and two more if you turn right. Parking attendants will be on site to issue parking permits to event attendees. \nDonald Tamaki is a Senior Counsel at the San Francisco law firm of Minami Tamaki LLP having received his BA and JD from U.C. Berkeley. \nIn the 1980’s\, Tamaki served on the pro bono legal team that reopened the 1944 Supreme Court case of Fred Korematsu\, a notorious precedent that validated forcing 125\,000 Japanese Americans into concentration camps on the claim they were spies. But almost 40 years later\, secret intelligence reports and Justice Department memos surfaced\, categorically denying that Japanese Americans were spying\, admitting there was no reason for the mass removal\, and calling the Army’s claims “intentional falsehoods.” Despite whistle-blower protests from government lawyers urging that they had a duty not to lie to the Court\, the Solicitor General stood by the Army’s claims knowing they were fabricated. The evidence was suppressed\, and much of it ordered burned. On the basis that a fraud had been committed\, Korematsu’s criminal conviction was erased. The ruling boosted the call for reparations to redress this great wrong. \nIn 2021\, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Tamaki to serve on the nine-member California Reparations Task Force (the Task Force) that produced the groundbreaking Final Report comprehensively documenting the cumulative impact of 246 years of enslavement\, another 100 years of Jim Crow oppression\, and decades more of segregation\, and to recommend to the Legislature what California should do to address the resulting compounding and cascading harms. \nTamaki is part of the leadership team of the Alliance for Reparations\, Reconciliation\, and Truth (ARRT)\, a multi-racial statewide coalition working to promote public awareness of the harms wrought by racial subjugation\, and to transform the Task Force’s 115 recommendations into legislation. \nHis awards include the ABA Spirit of Excellence Award (2020)\, the National Asian Pacific Bar Association Trailblazer Award (2003)\, and the State Bar of California Loren Miller Award (1987). \n\nThe Peggy Downes Baskin Ethics Lecture Series is a lively forum for the discussion and exploration of ethics-related challenges in human endeavors. The Ethics Lecture is made possible by the Peggy Downes Baskin Humanities Endowment for Interdisciplinary Ethics which enables the Humanities Division to promote a dialogue about ethics and ethics related challenges in an interdisciplinary setting. The endowment was established in honor of Peggy Downes Baskin’s longtime interest in ethical issues across the academic spectrum. \n\nThis event is open to all students\, faculty\, staff\, and members of the public consistent with University policy and state and federal law.

SUMMARY:Matt O’Hara – The Flying Death
DESCRIPTION:Bookshop Santa Cruz and The Humanities Institute present author Matt O’Hara for a reading and signing of The Flying Death—A dramatic tale of explorers of the 1930s racing to find and harvest a poisonous Amazon vine\, and how their work plundered local tribes and spurred the invention of new medicines. \n \nYour RSVP helps us plan for your arrival and keep in touch with any changes. Thank you for registering! \nIn the fall of 1938\, a young\, frail American explorer set off down a river in the western Amazon in search of curare\, a poison he thought might save his life. Richard Gill had learned that local tribes used curare-laced blow darts to kill animals\, but it was also potentially a cure for many ailments\, including his own. He also thought he could make a fortune by connecting the knowledge of two worlds. Obsessed with curare\, he raced to make deals with Indigenous poison masters in the Amazon and pharmaceutical companies back home\, even as his Russian-born rival Boris Krukoff sought to do the same. \nIn The Flying Death\, the historian Matt O’Hara asks who and what we are willing to sacrifice in the name of discovery and profit. O’Hara brings to life Gill’s epic quest\, a stranger-than-fiction true story that moves from unexplored territory in the Amazon to rogue medical trials and cutthroat corporate boardrooms in the United States. Navigating treacherous terrain and politics\, Gill and Krukoff successfully created a veritable curare-industrial complex\, as the plant became a key element in shock therapy\, transformed surgery in the United States and across the globe\, and eventually led to a Nobel Prize. The Flying Death offers a thrilling ride across Indigenous knowledge\, scientific exploration\, and exploitation\, unearthing a story of discovery that poses searching questions about the price of progress\, who pays it\, and who gets credit. \nMatt O’Hara is a professor of history at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. He is the award-winning author of many journal articles and two books\, The History of the Future in Colonial Mexico and A Flock Divided: Race\, Religion\, and Politics in Mexico\, 1749-1857.

SUMMARY:Research Lunch & Learn: Research cybersecurity and compliance attestation
DESCRIPTION:Federal agencies and research sponsors are increasingly requiring institutions to attest to and provide evidence of research security compliance. The stakes go beyond a single grant: a security incident can trigger a review of that attestation\, and granting agencies can pause or revoke funding across an entire program\, not just one award. Join Chief Information Security Officer Brian Hall for a discussion of what attestation requirements mean for UCSC\, where research security risks most commonly arise\, the role researchers and research staff play in helping the campus meet and keep meeting these compliance obligations\, and options we are exploring for researchers to use environments that are secure by default. \nJoin us on November 12\, 2026\, 12-1 p.m. (note different date due to holiday). \nJoin: Zoom link for this session.

SUMMARY:James Spooner in conversation with Johnny Damm on AFROPUNK\, anger\, and other things
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of the Arts and Sciences invites you to a conversation with filmmaker and graphic novelist James Spooner about his latest graphic novel\, moderated by cartoonist Johnny Damm. It Starts with Anger: A Punk Beginning. An AFROPUNK Ending tells the origin story of the multi-million-dollar AFROPUNK festival—beginning not with big stages or brand sponsorship\, but with one mixed-race teenager’s search for belonging in the nineties New York City punk scene. \nThe conversation will be followed by a book signing by Spooner. Local author and punk historian John Malkin will also be signing his new book\, Punk Spirit! – An Oral History of Punk Rock\, Spirituality\, and Liberation\, and Johnny Damm will have his latest comic\, I’m a Cop: Real Life Horror Comics No. 3 available.

SUMMARY:Fall Slow Seminar: The Range of the River by Iftekhar Iqbal
DESCRIPTION:UCSC’s Center for Southeast Asian Coastal Interactions (SEACoast) and the Center for South Asian Studies invite you to join us for a Slow Seminar to discuss Iftekhar Iqbal’s The Range of the River: Asia’s Great River Systems and the Making of a Transregional World on Monday\, November 16\, 2026 from 3:30-5:00pm PST in Room 210\, Humanities 1. \nSpanning nearly four million square kilometers across eastern South Asia\, mainland Southeast Asia\, and southern China\, the Tibetan river system connects some of Asia’s major waterways\, including the Brahmaputra\, Mekong\, and Yangtze. In The Range of the River\, Iqbal traces the intertwined histories of these rivers and the human and other-than-human forces that have shaped them. The book considers rivers not only as sites of imperial power\, territorial contestation\, and economic activity\, but also as dynamic forces and shared commons that have facilitated movement\, exchange\, commerce\, and cultural encounters across political and geographic boundaries. \nProfessor Anna Tsing (UCSC Anthropology) will facilitate our Slow Seminar to focus on three river systems explored in Iqbal’s book: the Brahmaputra\, Mekong\, and Yangtze. Three scholars including Sanjay Barbora (UCSC Sociology)\, David Biggs (UCR History)\, and Ben Read (UCSC Politics) will offer brief reflections on one river each\, providing distinct disciplinary and regional perspectives before the discussion opens to a broader collective conversation. Our seminar conversation will focus on Chapters 1\, 4\, 6\, and 7 of the book. \nPlease register for the Slow Seminar by filling out this Google Form. Registered guests will receive a PDF copy of selected chapters of The Range of the River via email. \nThis is a Hybrid event. Participants may join in-person at UCSC or by Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent out to registered participants at least 1 hour before the event. \nRegistration will close at midnight on November 15\, 2026. \nNew to Slow Seminars? Check out SEACoast’s definition here.
