This presentation places the Organization of American States (OAS) human rights inspection of the Dominican Republic in contrast to the writings of Dominican women to showcase the limitations of hemispheric entities of human rights in the Caribbean. The paper argues that in the absence of public platforms for truth and reconciliation\, the strategic employment of human rights and maternalism on behalf of Dominican women sought to hold the Dominican state accountable for state violence. Through the close reading of personal correspondence and state memoranda\, I examine how varying definitions of human were utilized by Dominican women to extract specific demands from Dominican officials. This presentation also examines the ways conservatism and rising Dominican radicalism influenced the demands women made of the state. Critically\, this paper excavates the central role of Dominican women in hemispheric development of human rights and reconciliation to argue for its inclusions in evaluations of the legacies of the Cold War radicalism in the Caribbean and Latin America. The book addresses how food movements’ racial politics and change-making strategies have shifted over recent decades\, in response to the interventions of activists and allies\, and in relation to the ever-vexing challenge of working across various kinds of difference. \nAntonio will present insights from North Stars\, illuminating the origins of right wing populist political strategies in California’s agrarian history\, dynamics of contemporary movement organizing among ecological farmers\, farmworkers\, Indigenous people\, food justice activists\, nonprofit staff\, researchers\, and others\, and suggestions for how to both diversify and strengthen the movement. \nAddressing social scientific and social movement debates about if and how social movements should seek radical change to society\, and how movements might navigate problematic political and economic systems not set up to serve them\, the talk will introduce the book’s call for a “North Star” approach to political change. Their importance underpins recent concerns about partisan gerrymandering in the states and makes civic participation even more critical given the narrow majorities in Congress. Indeed\, the outcome of congressional elections has significant consequences for whose voices are reflected in state and federal policymaking\, especially when both parties have used redistricting strategically to improve their electoral prospects. In advance of the 2026 midterm elections\, this event will contextualize past redistricting efforts and explore some of the most pressing threats to today’s electoral process. Our panel will discuss the long history of redistricting in the United States\, differentiate between racial gerrymandering and partisan gerrymandering\, discuss the intersection of race and partisan objectives\, highlight the role of recent state independent redistricting commissions and California’s Prop 50\, along with exclusionary changes to the Voting Rights Act and recent actions taken by the Supreme Court. A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Stacy Philpott \nSpeaker: Paolina Hwae Kyung Kao Yook Lu\, UC Davis \nTitle: Edible Insects and the Future of Food: Capitalist Dreams\, Loss\, and Everyday Immigrant Practices \nAbstract: In the 2010s\, edible insects emerged in popular discourse as a potential “food of the future.” Drawing on fieldwork and interviews conducted in the United States from 2019-2024 with entrepreneurs\, farmers\, and food producers\, this talk traces how insects became a hopeful response to anxieties about ecological crisis\, food security\, and changing ways of life. I bring one Southeast Asian American family’s enduring practice of foraging for grasshoppers into conversation with the emergence and transformation of the insect agriculture industry. Doing so reveals two distinct relationships to insects: one shaped by the anticipation of future loss and the desire to secure against it\, the other by losses already lived through displacement and relocation. In The Range of the River\, Iqbal traces the intertwined histories of these rivers and the human and other-than-human forces that have shaped them. The book considers rivers not only as sites of imperial power\, territorial contestation\, and economic activity\, but also as dynamic forces and shared commons that have facilitated movement\, exchange\, commerce\, and cultural encounters across political and geographic boundaries. \nProfessor Anna Tsing (UCSC Anthropology) will facilitate our Slow Seminar to focus on three river systems explored in Iqbal’s book: the Brahmaputra\, Mekong\, and Yangtze.
