SUMMARY:Ticknor\, B. (STAT) - Clustering and Tractable Multivariate Inference for Extremes
DESCRIPTION:Modeling environmental extremes often involves large collections of spatial or temporal records where both clustering similar series and modeling dependence among extremes are challenging tasks. This Ph.D. proposal addresses several related problems in extreme value analysis. In particular\, we study how to cluster many time series based on their extremal behavior using strategies defined via univariate extremal models\, motivated by an application to 975 coastal wave-height records. We also investigate the development of scalable multivariate models for dependent extremes. A tractable construction based on a latent multivariate $t$ process with generalized extreme value margins is proposed\, together with a regularization strategy that encourages extremal dependence consistent with a max-stable limit while preserving likelihood-based inference. DESCRIPTION:Visit the IAS\, UCSC’s premier art galleries\, for our spring exhibitions. On view April 10–August 16\, 2026 are three diverse and interdisciplinary shows: Libia Posada: Everything is Going Right\, the first US solo exhibition by the Colombia-based artist and medical doctor; Gina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj\, a site-specific and immersive exploration of the Haitian kreyol conception of rasanblaj; and Ronaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\, a mixed-media exhibition emerging at the intersections of Black poetics\, performance\, and visual art. \nThe IAS Galleries are open Wednesday-Sunday\, 12 pm – 5 pm. Admission is free to the public. \nLibia Posada: Everything is Going Right\nLibia Posada’s first solo exhibition in the United States features installations\, sculptures\, and drawings meticulously constructed from surgical instruments\, gauze bandages\, crutches\, used books\, and domestic picture frames. The new and existing works in the exhibition powerfully stitch together the personal\, social\, and political disorders and afflictions that currently trouble the world\, from the wars that resonate across the globe to the violences of aging in US prisons.  \nGina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins & Disentanglements\nThe internationally-lauded work of humanities professor Gina Athena Ulysse is on view as a premier Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. The site-specific installation\, produced in community from things collected\, found\, purchased and donated\, centers on the Haitian concept of rasanblaj\, a form of assembly and collage that transcends the formal use of materials to draw together people\, spirits\, and ideas.  \nRonaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\nCollage is both a material practice and a structural interrogation in the Faculty Spotlight Exhibition artworks by literature professor Ronaldo V. Wilson. In video\, painting\, and installation\, layers and folds conceal and reveal\, delving into the experience\, both bodily and emotive\, of living in times of violence.  \n

SUMMARY:Visualizing Abolition Screening Series: Beyond Access
DESCRIPTION:On view in the IAS Screening Room is a selection of short films curated by Visualizing Abolition Visiting Faculty Fellow Dr. Pooja Rangan. \nPrisons deny and censor the access of those trapped inside them—to information\, to intimacy\, to community\, to meaningful work\, to nourishment of all kinds\, and perhaps most cruelly\, to care. This program assembles a series of films\, including works by filmmakers incarcerated in California as well as others without that lived experience. Together\, these works confront the debilitating impacts of these restrictions and reveal how the disabling logic of the prison is extended to other institutional spaces (the hospital\, the university)\, turning access into a scarce commodity by enclosing what should be held in common. Together\, these works confront the debilitating impacts of these restrictions and reveal how the disabling logic of the prison is extended to other institutional spaces (the hospital\, the university)\, turning access into a scarce commodity by enclosing what should be held in common. SUMMARY:Statistics Seminar: Calibration Weighting-Style Diagnostics for Nonlinear Bayesian Hierarchical Models
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Ryan Giordano\, UC Berkeley Statistics \nDescription: Multilevel Regression with Post-stratification (MrP) has become a workhorse method for estimating population quantities using non-probability surveys\, and is the primary alternative to traditional survey calibration weights\, e.g.~ as computed by raking. For simple linear regression models\, MrP methods admit “equivalent weights”\, allowing for direct comparisons between MrP and traditional calibration weights (Gelman 2006). In the present work\, we develop a more general framework for computing and interpreting “MrP local equivalent weights” (MrPlew)\, which admit direct comparison with calibration weights in terms of important diagnostic quantities such as covariate balance\, frequentist sampling variability\, and partial pooling. MrPlew is based on a local approximation\, which we show in theory and practice to be accurate and meaningful for the target diagnostics. Importantly\, MrPlew can be easily computed based on existing MCMC samples and conveniently wraps standard MrP software implementations. \nBio: Dr. Ryan Giordano is currently an assistant professor of statistics at UC Berkeley. Dr. Ryan Giordano earned a PhD in Statistics from UC Berkeley advised by Michael Jordan\, Tamara Broderick\, and Jon McAuliffe\, an MSc with distinction in econometrics and mathematical economics from the London School of Economics\, and undergraduate degrees in mathematics and engineering mechanics from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Ryan Giordano has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT under Tamara Broderick\, as an engineer for Google and HP\, and served for two years as an education volunteer in the US Peace Corps in Kazakhstan. DESCRIPTION:The Escapes of David George: An Odyssey of Slavery\, Freedom\, and the American Revolution \nThe Escapes of David George: An Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom in the Revolutionary Era describes the life of a man born enslaved in colonial Virginia\, whose repeated escape attempts made his life a remarkable odyssey. He survived enslavement on Virginia and Carolina plantations\, stints hiding in backcountry Carolina settlements\, captivity in Native American communities\, battlefields of the American Revolution\, and evacuation as a refugee from the emerging United States. Along the way\, he formed a family\, became a preacher\, and founded the first Black Baptist congregation in what became the United States. His surviving narrative offers the earliest known firsthand account of escaping slavery in North America. And because his struggle against slavery spanned the revolutionary era\, his story offers a counterweight to the many biographies of white “founding fathers.” Instead of a fight for political freedom from Britain and monarchy\, George’s life revealss a parallel quest for freedom from American slavery.
