A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Elliott Campbell \nSpeaker: Siyu Luo\, UC Santa Cruz\, ENVS \nTitle: Exit Talk: Geospatial Optimization of California’s Organic Waste Diversion System: Transportation\, Compliance\, and Infrastructure Planning \nAbstract: Organic waste decomposition in landfills is a major source of anthropogenic methane\, a greenhouse gas with approximately 86 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide over 20 years. California’s Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) requires a 75% reduction in organic waste disposal relative to 2014 levels\, creating substantial infrastructure and logistical challenges. This dissertation develops statewide geospatial optimization frameworks linking 447 waste generating jurisdictions\, approximately 200 composting facilities\, agricultural working lands\, and transportation networks. I examine the spatial alignment of waste generation\, processing capacity\, and cropland demand; the effects of alternative compliance structures on costs and greenhouse gas emissions; and the siting of additional composting infrastructure under economic\, logistical\, and regulatory constraints. Results show that strong spatial differences in waste generation\, processing capacity\, transportation\, and compost end use shape system performance and regional burdens. Statewide coordination can reduce costs and emissions by shifting diversion toward lower cost locations\, while jurisdiction level compliance promotes broader participation. Substantial additional processing capacity is still required\, and siting is constrained by transportation\, water and air quality regulation\, and limited VOC Emission Reduction Credit availability. Overall\, effective diversion requires coordinated planning of infrastructure\, compliance\, end use markets\, and environmental regulation. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Food\, Socializing\, and Excellent talks from the PyTorch Ecosystem\n\n​5:30 – 6:30 Food and Socializing\n​6:30 – 7:00 Rob Timpe – Using and Debugging Torch.compile\n​7:00 – 7:30 Roy Shadmon – EdgeFL and Federated Learning\n​7:30 – 8:00 Talk 3\n\n​Talk 1: \n​Using and Debugging Torch.compile\n​Torch.compile promises great speedups with a one line change\, but can give cryptic error messages when it fails.  We’ll describe some common failures and how to fix them\, as well as recent efforts to both reduce failures and make the remaining ones easier to debug. \nRob Timpe is a software engineer at OpenTeams where he works on the front end of torch.compile (Dynamo).  Previously he was an ML engineer working on autonomous aircraft at Xwing\, and computer vision at Microsoft. \n​Talk 2: \n​EdgeFL and Federated Learning\n​EdgeLake coordinates federated learning across distributed sites without moving raw training data to a central location. Each site trains locally\, EdgeLake handles the distributed data and coordination layer\, and the resulting models are shared across the network and deployed for inference at the edge — creating a continuous path from managing distributed data to training models to running inference\, all at the edge. \n​Roy Shadmon is a System Architect at AnyLog\, where he works on EdgeLake and its applications in federated learning and distributed edge intelligence. Jennings about his new book\, Revolutionary Science: The Struggle for Agroecology in the Americas. \nAbout the book\nAs the climate crisis becomes more urgent and issues of social inequality intensify\, Revolutionary Science: The Struggle for Agroecology in the Americas shows how agroecology offers hope rooted in a deeper understanding of ecology\, society\, and collective struggle. In the 1940s\, a US-backed campaign spread industrial agriculture across the Americas\, dismantling traditional farming systems that had sustained campesino communities for generations. The result was ecological damage\, cultural loss\, and deepened inequality. Amid this devastation\, a group of Latin American scientists chose another path. Working alongside farmers\, Indigenous communities\, and social movements\, they helped shape a new vision — agroecology: a science grounded in ecology\, cultural respect\, and political commitment to those most marginalized. DESCRIPTION:Sitar maestro Nishat Khan returns to UC Santa Cruz with tabla maestro Nitin Mitta in an Indian classical music concert. \nRegarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation for his unique and inspiring work\, Khan’s masterful collaborations truly connect music globally. With the strike of a single\, unmistakable note\, the sound of Khan’s sitar instantly captivates and transforms one’s mood. Listeners are transported to another realm by a sight and sound unlike any other. As a torchbearer of the most recorded musical family in the world\, the Imdad Khani Gharana\, seven generations of wisdom reside in his fingertips. While grounded in centuries of tradition\, Khan forges his own signature sound with a refreshing twist: familiar yet challenging\, unfolding with emotional contrasts and surprises at every turn. \nTouring and performing throughout the world since age 13\, Nishat Khan’s unique cosmopolitan perspective has inspired a great sensitivity and connection to the cultures of music of the world. He gave his first public concert at age 7\, and was the youngest performer on an All India Radio national programme at age 15. In more recent years\, Khan created history in summer 2025 by composing and creating the first ever traditional (Western) opera from the Indian subcontinent\, the Taj Mahal Opera. The opera had its premiere at the Grange Park Opera in the UK to sold-out performances and wide critical acclaim. His recent performances in 2026 include a sold-out concert at the Freight in Berkeley\, California. \n\nThe press calls Khan: “Profound and electrifying…pure exhilaration\, taking tradition as a blueprint for ecstasy” (The New York Times); “Etherial\, compelling\, sensual\, Nishat Khan master of the sitar” (Los Angeles Times); “Freewheeling virtuosity inflected with infinite imaginative variety” (BBC Proms\, The Guardian); and “Ferociously gifted…no conceivable limitations…his sitar roars\, cries\, and exults” (Times of India). \n\nNitin Mitta is regarded as one of the most sought after tabla players in the music world and has quickly established a reputation as an artist with a rare combination of technical virtuosity\, spontaneity\, clarity of tone\, and sensitivity to melodic nuance. He is an acclaimed accompanist who has performed with some of India’s most celebrated musicians including Pandit Jasraj\, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra\, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt\, Ustad Nishat Khan\, Ustad Shahid Parvez and Pandit Nayan Ghosh. A UC Santa Cruz email address is required to access the recording. \nHost: Maywa Montenegro \nSpeaker: Diana Macias\, UC Berkeley \nTitle: Caring for cultural keystones: Indigenous-led stewardship\, public values\, and tree genomics in a hotter\, drier world \nAbstract: Pinyon pine nuts are a culturally significant food source for Indigenous communities who have cared for pinyon-juniper woodlands for millennia. However\, colonial land dispossession and federal land management have disrupted these relationships\, while recent droughts\, wildfires\, pests and pathogens have resulted in extensive tree die-off. In the Eastern Sierra of California and Nevada\, differing knowledge systems and unequal institutional power have limited effective co-management between Tribes and federal agencies. My work asks: how do we sustain the local variation and place-based knowledge that make tree persistence possible? I share results from three studies: (1) An Indigenous-led monitoring network tracking tree health and cone production\, priorities identified by Tribal Environmental Departments of the Big Pine Paiute\, Bishop Paiute\, and Washoe Tribes; (2) a regional household survey that examined whether recognition of pinyon–juniper woodlands\, climate change knowledge\, and demographic factors predicted four measures of environmental care; and (3) a genomic data set from across the pinyon pine species complex which revealed the geography of genetic variation and signatures of climate adaptation. Together\, these projects show how ecological monitoring\, public perspectives\, and population genomics can inform the future of pinyon-juniper woodlands and underscore a broader responsibility to support Indigenous-led stewardship. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:October Slugs and Steins with Professor Matt O'Hara
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Death: Poison\, Plunder\, and the Quest for a Miracle Medicine in the Amazon\nIn the 1930s and 40s\, amateur explorers and hardened plant hunters combed the Amazon in a race to unlock the secrets of curare\, an Indigenous poison they hoped could cure many diseases. The poison they brought north had a major impact on the practice of medicine as it became routinely used in shock therapy to treat psychiatric disorders\, transformed anesthesia and surgery across the globe\, and led to a Swiss scientist’s Nobel prize. Drawing on thousands of pages of archival documents and hours of oral histories and interviews\, O’Hara brings to life this epic quest\, a stranger-than-fiction story that moves from Indigenous lands in the Amazon to rogue medical trials to cutthroat strategizing in corporate boardrooms. He also poses searching questions about who receives the glory and profit when medical progress is made\, and who pays the price. \nMatt O’Hara is professor of history at the University of California\, Santa Cruz. He is the author or editor of four books on the history of Latin America. This talk draws on his forthcoming book for which he was named a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar. \nREGISTER

Research the organization \nIdentify the top 3-5 companies you are interested in\, but remember to be open to different companies you may not have heard of because they may be a startup or business-to-business organization that doesn’t directly serve consumers. \nDo your research by reviewing company websites. Look for their mission\, values\, location\, and the type of available opportunities (e.g.\, internships\, full-time positions\, etc.).
