SUMMARY:Harriet: Performing an Archive
DESCRIPTION:Through motion capture\, immersive sound\, and real-time digital systems\, CHARI performs alongside Harriet\, a life-scale avatar carrying a living archive of Black sonic and vernacular memory. Drawing from Black archival traditions rooted in call-and-response\, improvisation\, and communal stewardship\, the performance understands memory as relational and alive. Together\, our movements shape the environment as the performance unfolds\, images shift\, sound expands\, and memory surfaces in fragments. Performing An Archive turns the stage into a threshold between body and code\, memory and possibility. It imagines a future where technology is not distant or extractive\, but intimate\, attentive\, and alive. SUMMARY:VMCC Talk with Maggie Cao—Sepia: Biotic Media and Ocean Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Sepia is a term used to describe inks of a rich\, brown color\, but few know that this artistic usage is taken from the animal world\, where sepia refers to a genus of cuttlefish—a nod to the long history of extracting melanin fluid from cephalopods for drawing and writing. This talk uses cuttlefish ink as a vehicle for rethinking human-ocean relations in the mid nineteenth century\, tracing flows between Victor Hugo’s maritime drawings made in the Channel Islands to paleontological discoveries and scientific illustrations on nearby coastlines. During the nineteenth century\, the expansion of fisheries and the growth of marine biology fostered public interest in the strangeness of cephalopods\, or “devil fish\,” whose inkiness was associated with artistic creation. Experiments with biotic media\, the talk argues\, were efforts to conceptualize the nonhuman environment of the ocean. \nThis event is presented as part of the Visual & Media Cultures Colloquium (VMCC) Series.\n—\nADMISSION\n– FREE and open to the public\n– Located in Porter College Rm. SUMMARY:VMCC Series: Yiman Wang
DESCRIPTION:In a lecture delivered by UC Santa Cruz Professor Yiman Wang\, this talk delves into Mao-era moving image culture that featured experimentation with public health\, horticulture\, and animal husbandry to unpack what cinematic experiments were developed\, how scientific experiments were conducted\, and in what ways they were intended to intertwine with the nation-wide experiment with rebuilding the new socialist human’s psyche and a new socio-political world. The talk also explores why such conjoined experiments often fell apart\, what one might gain by recentering the unruly human and more-than-human “raw material” that were experimented on\, and ultimately\, how the environmental turn in media studies could benefit from a study of socialist trifold cinematic-scientific-socio-political experimentations.\n—\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nYiman Wang (Ph.D.\, Graduate Program in Literature\, Duke University) is Professor and Chair of Film & Digital Media at University of California\, Santa Cruz. She is author of Remaking Chinese Cinema: Through the Prism of Shanghai\, Hong Kong and Hollywood (University of Hawaii Press 2013)\, and To Be an Actress: Labor and Performance in Anna May Wong’s Cross-Media World (University of California Press 2024). She has published numerous articles in journals and edited volumes on topics of socialist environmental media\, feminist media histories\, ethnic border-crossing stardom\, eco-cinema\, Chinese cinema\, independent documentary\, film remakes and adaptations. She is editor of a special issue of Feminist Media Histories on Asian Feminist Media (2019)\, co-editor of an InFocus Dossier on Queering Asian Media in Journal of Cinema and Media Studies (2023)\, co-editor of Chinese Animation: Multiplicities in Motion (2025)\, associate editor of Journal of Chinese Cinemas\, and co-editor of the Global East Asian Screen Cultures book series published by Bloomsbury.\n—\nADMISSION\n– FREE and open to the public\n– Located in Porter College Rm. Research the organization \nIdentify the top 3-5 companies you are interested in\, but remember to be open to different companies you may not have heard of because they may be a startup or business-to-business organization that doesn’t directly serve consumers. \nDo your research by reviewing company websites. For Chief Satanta of the Kiowa Nation\, to roam the land freely was life itself. For N. Scott Momaday\, land must be “believed to be seen.” For Eliot Porter\, light and reflection imparted magic to Glen Canyon’s waters. For Wallace Stegner\, saving natural places meant saving fragments of our collective sanity. For Brook M. Thompson\, the Klamath River is recognized with personhood. Alongside these perspectives\, Paul’s images press us to see public land not as scenery to extract or aestheticize\, but as sustenance and history. Land is alive and contested. To see closely is not to linger on a romanticized vision of the American landscape\, but to reckon with responsibility: how we safeguard access\, how we imagine “wildness\,” and how we hold space for futures beyond our own. SUMMARY:Road Trip! Light in the American West\, from Baja to the Yukon
DESCRIPTION:The photographs in this exhibition\, made between 2004 and 2025\, span across the American West from the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico to The Yukon territory in Canada. Paul Schoellhamer’s (Cowell ‘69) color photographs invite us to travel with him and reflect on our relationship to land\, the light that shapes it\, and the freedom – contested but essential – to move across it. \nThe exhibition draws on voices across time and perspective that frame the American landscape as more than a stage for beauty and awe. For Chief Satanta of the Kiowa Nation\, to roam the land freely was life itself. For N. Scott Momaday\, land must be “believed to be seen.” For Eliot Porter\, light and reflection imparted magic to Glen Canyon’s waters. For Wallace Stegner\, saving natural places meant saving fragments of our collective sanity. For Brook M. Thompson\, the Klamath River is recognized with personhood. Alongside these perspectives\, Paul’s images press us to see public land not as scenery to extract or aestheticize\, but as sustenance and history. Land is alive and contested. To see closely is not to linger on a romanticized vision of the American landscape\, but to reckon with responsibility: how we safeguard access\, how we imagine “wildness\,” and how we hold space for futures beyond our own.
