SUMMARY:Beautiful Universe - An astrophotography exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Universe is a pop-up exhibit in collaboration with the UC Santa Cruz Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics that will be on display at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History from May 21 to 31.\nIn over more than 20 photos\, you will see galaxies\, novae\, supernovae\, reflection and emission nebulae\, and interstellar dust clouds that give birth to new stars and planets. They are artistic images filled with scientific information. The astrophotography exhibit bridges the gap that often exists in our minds between art and science. \nAsk an astronomer! Astronomers will be on site at the Museum of Art and History in downtown Santa Cruz from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends (May 23\, 24\, 30\, and 31) to answer your questions. \nImages are by Steve Mandel and Bob Fera\, Deep Space Remote Observatories\, and once the pop-up exhibit concludes\, the photos on display will be permanently installed on the UC Santa Cruz campus\, courtesy of Steve Mandel\, research associate for the UC Santa Cruz Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and sponsor of the Mandel Lecture Series. \nLearn more.

DESCRIPTION:Landesman Lecture: Integrating Mathematical and Scientific Research with Excellence in Teaching\nAncestral Matter\, Shared Humanity\, Beyond Borders and Labels\nThis evening blends science\, poetry\, and storytelling to explore our deepest origins and shared humanity. Tracing the cosmic formation of the elements that make our bodies\, we reflect on an ancestry older than nations\, borders\, and labels. Through verse and story\, we connect stellar history with lived experience\, inviting us to see how our many identities arise from the same ancestral matter. Together\, we explore how storytelling can soften divisions\, cross boundaries\, and remind us that we are forged from one common origin. \nRegister to attend in-person or virtual\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m. for guests attending in person\nLecture: 6 p.m.\nFollowed by a reception for in-person guests\nFree and open to the public\nParking is $11 \nPresented by the UC Santa Cruz Emeriti Association \n  \n  \n \nEnrico Ramirez-Ruiz studies some of the most powerful explosions since the birth of the universe by looking not at the heavens but at computer models. Eager to understand our origins\, he uses simulations to explore the cataclysmic death of stars that give rise to many of the elements of the periodic table. His work tests ideas at the edge of human experience\, challenging how we imagine the universe and our place within it. \n \nJasmine Schlafke\, better known by her stage name Queen Jasmeen\, is a poet\, slam coach\, diversity trainer\, and a doula from Santa Cruz\, CA. Her first book\, Crowned\, published in 2019 by Bay Company Books\, is a widely respected expression of the complexity of compounded identities\, reflecting on mental health\, race\, teen parenting\, womanhood\, ministry\, and so much more. Currently\, she works as a privately contracted poetry and performance coach and is a proud single mother of two grown children. \n

SUMMARY:Astrophysics: The Largest Unknowns and the Biggest Challenges
DESCRIPTION:UCSC Professor Alexie Leauthaud will discuss her groundbreaking work understanding the past and future of our universe. \nIn this exciting public lecture\, Professor Alexie Leauthaud will discuss some of the largest challenges and unknowns in Astrophysics. She will present the latest results on the nature of our universe\, including groundbreaking and prize-winning new results on the nature of dark energy. Leauthaud will discuss our current understanding of the basic ingredients of our Universe and will explain why recent results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Collaboration (DESI) collaboration made international headline news earlier this year. \nShe will speculate on what this might mean for the future of our Universe. Professor Leauthaud will discuss other top challenges facing the profession\, including political headwinds\, recent attacks on science and funding\, and will also explain why astronomers are increasingly becoming involved in the fight against climate change. She will discuss her own journey in recognizing the predicament of life on this blue planet will conclude with a big picture view of the challenges that lie ahead. \nThe Mandel Lecture is free and open to the public.
