SUMMARY:Yoga as Healing Series
DESCRIPTION:Yoga as Healing is a 7-session trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness program hosted by UCSC’s CARE office. Spring Quarter classes will be held Tuesdays\, 6:00–7:30 p.m. from March 31–May 12. Classes are free for students. \nEach class facilitated by CARE Advocate Abbey Wise (she/ella)\, includes gentle\, trauma-informed movement\, breathwork\, meditation and reflective journaling to support survivors in reconnecting with their bodies\, building confidence and being present. Mats\, blocks\, blankets and journals are provided. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle. \nCARE aims to build a consistent group of 8-10 survivors who can attend all 7 classes to foster the community\, predictability and safety core to the trauma-informed structure of the program. \nIf you are interested in participating submit an application and a CARE Advocate will get back to you with further information. DESCRIPTION:Through motion capture\, immersive sound\, and real-time digital systems\, CHARI (Dr. Chari Smith) performs alongside Harriet\, a life-scale avatar carrying a living archive of Black sonic and vernacular memory. Drawing from Black archival traditions rooted in call-and-response\, improvisation\, and communal stewardship\, the performance understands memory as relational and alive. Together\, our movements shape the environment as the performance unfolds\, images shift\, sound expands\, and memory surfaces in fragments. \nPerforming Anarchive turns the stage into a threshold between body and code\, memory and possibility. SUMMARY:Yoga as Healing Series
DESCRIPTION:Yoga as Healing is a 7-session trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness program hosted by UCSC’s CARE office. Spring Quarter classes will be held Tuesdays\, 6:00–7:30 p.m. from March 31–May 12. Classes are free for students. \nEach class facilitated by CARE Advocate Abbey Wise (she/ella)\, includes gentle\, trauma-informed movement\, breathwork\, meditation and reflective journaling to support survivors in reconnecting with their bodies\, building confidence and being present. Mats\, blocks\, blankets and journals are provided. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle. \nCARE aims to build a consistent group of 8-10 survivors who can attend all 7 classes to foster the community\, predictability and safety core to the trauma-informed structure of the program. \nIf you are interested in participating submit an application and a CARE Advocate will get back to you with further information. A graduate of Yale\, Cornell\, and Rockefeller University\, Dr. Hotez has dedicated his career to global health\, co-developing low-cost COVID-19 vaccines administered to over 100 million people in India and Indonesia. \nBeyond the lab\, Dr. Hotez is one of the nation’s most prominent “science explainers\,” tirelessly combating the rise of anti-science sentiment. In this lecture\, he will discuss the themes of his current book\, Science Under Siege (co-authored with climate scientist Michael Mann)\, offering a front-line perspective on defending scientific integrity and public health in an era of unprecedented challenge. \n

SUMMARY:Flow and Friction: Media Practices Across Global Asias
DESCRIPTION:Though flow and friction have their enmeshed problematic of combined colonial and imperial mechanisms\, we also believe that they can be useful concepts to think through the transnational and deimperial techniques that Global Asias can offer. Global Asias offer an expansive model to consider the imaginary or symbolic Asia as a series of diasporic interpolations constituted by Asian\, non-Asian\, and indigenous peoples and cultures. It demonstrates that worlds are not singular\, much like media and its practices\, and are contingent upon the labor and bodies that engage and disengage with them. It is also the subject of concern for our research cluster and symposium.\nWe are thrilled to have Professor Lisa Nakamura join our symposium as the keynote speaker. She is the Gwendolyn Calvert Baker Collegiate Professor in the Department of American Cultures at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, and her seminal work Digitizing Race: Visual Cultures of the Internet received the Asian American Studies Association award in Cultural Studies in 2010. Her extensive research and publications on the intersections of digital media theory\, Asian American studies\, and race and gender demonstrates that media is both racial(ized) and racist.\n—\nADMISSION\n– FREE and open to Arts Division Staff & Faculty\, Arts Division Students\, and their Invited Guests\n—\nPARKING\n– Closest lots to the event are Lots 107\, 108\, 109 and 110.
