In South Korea\, it gained political currency during the 2017 presidential impeachment protests\, when feminist\, disability rights\, and animal rights groups were criticized for bringing their demands into the demonstrations. Their interventions were dismissed as distractions—acts of “picking up shells” at a moment when the sole priority was said to be the president’s removal. \n“We choose to pick up shells nonetheless. Not because the crisis is small\, but because the shells matter. They are the body of the future\, what accumulates slowly\, what endures. One day\, shells become mountains\, and mountains become home. To pick up shells is not to turn away from urgency\, but to insist on a future beyond it. \n“This exhibition comes together through an insistence on the opposite premise: that picking up shells while disaster is at our doorstep is not a distraction\, but a necessity. What gets dismissed as marginal\, secondary\, a mere luxury\, or mistimed\, is precisely where social and political life becomes livable and where dreams\, desire and the imagination open lines of flight towards other worlds. \n“Waves can level buildings once on the shore\, dragging and revealing the damage as they recede. Rather than turning away from the storm\, we acknowledge the multilayered and epistemic devastation caused by centuries of colonial\, patriarchal\, racist violence upon people\, earth and more than human life. We witness the ongoing bifurcation of human and nature that is sedimented into our lives\, languages and social\, material\, infrastructures. \n“The act of bending down to gather shells\, ردم\,  fragments\, sounds\, 뼈\, blue bottles\, grotta\, relationships\, bodies\, cries—composes a score that moves towards forms of care through minor gestures\, embodiment\, ritual\, ofrendas\, listening and beholding.  Mundane and everyday poetics do not negate the scale of devastation and loss\, nor do they refuse engagement. Rather\, they bear witness. They reveal pathways towards endurance\, negotiation\, memory and imagination beyond colonial catastrophe. In this sense\, the exhibition reframes the tsunami not as a singular event or metaphor\, but an invitation us to behold\, actively look\, to sit within the textures of tectonic plates and energy flows\, at the conjuncture where plates meet\, in the flow of energy through tempo\, liquid\, movement\, land\, sound\, ecotone. \n“The wave does not demand one unified response. It forms part of a condition\, a form of everyday accretion\, a movement in and out of different temporalities. Picking up shells while the tsunami unfolds\, amid the tsunami\, alongside the water’s ebbs and flows\, calls us to pay attention to overlooked lives\, stories\, bodies\, memories\, flows and relations\, to transform materials so that they become reconstituted and are able to hold new and ongoing narratives that refuse to remain silent.”

DESCRIPTION:The third annual Slug48 returns with a 48-hour film competition—open to all UC Santa Cruz students. A 48-hour film is one that is written\, shot\, edited\, and all music composed within a 48-hour time period. Teams and strategies for filming may be formed ahead of time\, but nothing can be written\, and no footage can be shot\, until the clock is ticking. DESCRIPTION:Visit the IAS\, UCSC’s premier art galleries\, for our spring exhibitions. On view April 10–August 16\, 2026 are three diverse and interdisciplinary shows: Libia Posada: Everything is Going Right\, the first US solo exhibition by the Colombia-based artist and medical doctor; Gina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj\, a site-specific and immersive exploration of the Haitian kreyol conception of rasanblaj; and Ronaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\, a mixed-media exhibition emerging at the intersections of Black poetics\, performance\, and visual art. \nThe IAS Galleries are open Wednesday-Sunday\, 12 pm – 5 pm. Admission is free to the public. \nLibia Posada: Everything is Going Right\nLibia Posada’s first solo exhibition in the United States features installations\, sculptures\, and drawings meticulously constructed from surgical instruments\, gauze bandages\, crutches\, used books\, and domestic picture frames. The new and existing works in the exhibition powerfully stitch together the personal\, social\, and political disorders and afflictions that currently trouble the world\, from the wars that resonate across the globe to the violences of aging in US prisons.  \nGina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins & Disentanglements\nThe internationally-lauded work of humanities professor Gina Athena Ulysse is on view as a premier Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. The site-specific installation\, produced in community from things collected\, found\, purchased and donated\, centers on the Haitian concept of rasanblaj\, a form of assembly and collage that transcends the formal use of materials to draw together people\, spirits\, and ideas.  \nRonaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\nCollage is both a material practice and a structural interrogation in the Faculty Spotlight Exhibition artworks by literature professor Ronaldo V. Wilson. In video\, painting\, and installation\, layers and folds conceal and reveal\, delving into the experience\, both bodily and emotive\, of living in times of violence.  \n

SUMMARY:Visualizing Abolition Screening Series: Beyond Access
DESCRIPTION:On view in the IAS Screening Room is a selection of short films curated by Visualizing Abolition Visiting Faculty Fellow Dr. Pooja Rangan. \nPrisons deny and censor the access of those trapped inside them—to information\, to intimacy\, to community\, to meaningful work\, to nourishment of all kinds\, and perhaps most cruelly\, to care. This program assembles a series of films\, including works by filmmakers incarcerated in California as well as others without that lived experience. Together\, these works confront the debilitating impacts of these restrictions and reveal how the disabling logic of the prison is extended to other institutional spaces (the hospital\, the university)\, turning access into a scarce commodity by enclosing what should be held in common. SUMMARY:Pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi—April in Santa Cruz
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi graces UC Santa Cruz’s Music Center Recital Hall with Rippling\, Resistance\, and Rain\, a unique concert of 21st century piano music written by composers from Japan and the United States. The program opens with an imaginative fantasy of a bird\, explores the psychology of addiction and mental illness\, explores a liberating sense of dance\, a deep exploration of “synaesthesic” texture\, testifies to our profound crisis of human-caused climate change—and the need to resist it—and concludes whimsically with a scent of rain. DESCRIPTION:Visit the IAS\, UCSC’s premier art galleries\, for our spring exhibitions. On view April 10–August 16\, 2026 are three diverse and interdisciplinary shows: Libia Posada: Everything is Going Right\, the first US solo exhibition by the Colombia-based artist and medical doctor; Gina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj\, a site-specific and immersive exploration of the Haitian kreyol conception of rasanblaj; and Ronaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\, a mixed-media exhibition emerging at the intersections of Black poetics\, performance\, and visual art. \nThe IAS Galleries are open Wednesday-Sunday\, 12 pm – 5 pm. Admission is free to the public. \nLibia Posada: Everything is Going Right\nLibia Posada’s first solo exhibition in the United States features installations\, sculptures\, and drawings meticulously constructed from surgical instruments\, gauze bandages\, crutches\, used books\, and domestic picture frames. The new and existing works in the exhibition powerfully stitch together the personal\, social\, and political disorders and afflictions that currently trouble the world\, from the wars that resonate across the globe to the violences of aging in US prisons.  \nGina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins & Disentanglements\nThe internationally-lauded work of humanities professor Gina Athena Ulysse is on view as a premier Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. The site-specific installation\, produced in community from things collected\, found\, purchased and donated\, centers on the Haitian concept of rasanblaj\, a form of assembly and collage that transcends the formal use of materials to draw together people\, spirits\, and ideas.  \nRonaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\nCollage is both a material practice and a structural interrogation in the Faculty Spotlight Exhibition artworks by literature professor Ronaldo V. Wilson. SUMMARY:Visualizing Abolition Screening Series: Beyond Access
DESCRIPTION:On view in the IAS Screening Room is a selection of short films curated by Visualizing Abolition Visiting Faculty Fellow Dr. Pooja Rangan. \nPrisons deny and censor the access of those trapped inside them—to information\, to intimacy\, to community\, to meaningful work\, to nourishment of all kinds\, and perhaps most cruelly\, to care. This program assembles a series of films\, including works by filmmakers incarcerated in California as well as others without that lived experience. Together\, these works confront the debilitating impacts of these restrictions and reveal how the disabling logic of the prison is extended to other institutional spaces (the hospital\, the university)\, turning access into a scarce commodity by enclosing what should be held in common. SUMMARY:Visualizing Abolition Screening Series: Beyond Access
DESCRIPTION:On view in the IAS Screening Room is a selection of short films curated by Visualizing Abolition Visiting Faculty Fellow Dr. Pooja Rangan. \nPrisons deny and censor the access of those trapped inside them—to information\, to intimacy\, to community\, to meaningful work\, to nourishment of all kinds\, and perhaps most cruelly\, to care. This program assembles a series of films\, including works by filmmakers incarcerated in California as well as others without that lived experience. Together\, these works confront the debilitating impacts of these restrictions and reveal how the disabling logic of the prison is extended to other institutional spaces (the hospital\, the university)\, turning access into a scarce commodity by enclosing what should be held in common. On view April 10–August 16\, 2026 are three diverse and interdisciplinary shows: Libia Posada: Everything is Going Right\, the first US solo exhibition by the Colombia-based artist and medical doctor; Gina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj\, a site-specific and immersive exploration of the Haitian kreyol conception of rasanblaj; and Ronaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\, a mixed-media exhibition emerging at the intersections of Black poetics\, performance\, and visual art. \nThe IAS Galleries are open Wednesday-Sunday\, 12 pm – 5 pm. Admission is free to the public. \nLibia Posada: Everything is Going Right\nLibia Posada’s first solo exhibition in the United States features installations\, sculptures\, and drawings meticulously constructed from surgical instruments\, gauze bandages\, crutches\, used books\, and domestic picture frames. The new and existing works in the exhibition powerfully stitch together the personal\, social\, and political disorders and afflictions that currently trouble the world\, from the wars that resonate across the globe to the violences of aging in US prisons.  \nGina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins & Disentanglements\nThe internationally-lauded work of humanities professor Gina Athena Ulysse is on view as a premier Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. The site-specific installation\, produced in community from things collected\, found\, purchased and donated\, centers on the Haitian concept of rasanblaj\, a form of assembly and collage that transcends the formal use of materials to draw together people\, spirits\, and ideas.  \nRonaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\nCollage is both a material practice and a structural interrogation in the Faculty Spotlight Exhibition artworks by literature professor Ronaldo V. Wilson. In video\, painting\, and installation\, layers and folds conceal and reveal\, delving into the experience\, both bodily and emotive\, of living in times of violence.  \n

SUMMARY:Jaleh Mansoor: Political Agency in The Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Jaleh Mansoor will draw upon recent Italian Marxist Feminist perspectives on ecology and discourses on the Anthropocene to question how Italian feminist analyses of invisible labor came to be elided with the question of a wider\, post anthropocentric ecological horizon. Jaleh Mansoor is a writer and an associate professor of Art History at the University of British Columbia\, Vancouver\, where she teaches modern and contemporary art history with an emphasis on Post WWII European Art. Her areas of interest\, in addition to art and its histories\, include Materialist Formalism and Marxist Feminism. Mansoor’s first monographic book\, Marshall Plan Modernism: Italian Postwar Abstraction and the Beginnings of Autonomia was published by Duke UP in 2016.  \nHer latest primary project\, titled after Picabia’s eponymous homage to a passage in Marx’s Philosophical and Economic Manuscripts of 1844\, is Universal Prostitution: A Counter History of Modernism\, published by Duke University Press in May 2025. It traces the historical and structural entwinement of aesthetic and real (or concrete) abstraction — defined as the extraction of labor power valorized by transactional exchange on the market — over 20th-century art to offer a comprehensive account of the political-economic forces that motivated modernist abstraction and the advent of post-humanism.\n—\nThe Visual & Media Cultures Colloquium (VMCC) is an annual lecture series that brings cutting-edge scholars to speak on a broad range of subjects related to visual and media culture. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a conversation between Gina Athena Ulysse and Jennifer González\, discussing Ulysse’s solo exhibition Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins & Disentanglements. \nThe internationally-lauded work of humanities professor Gina Athena Ulysse is on view at the IAS as an inaugural Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. The site-specific installation\, produced in community from things collected\, found\, purchased and donated\, centers on the concept developed by the artist of “rasanblaj”\, a form of assembly and collage that transcends the formal use of materials to draw together people\, spirits\, and ideas. \nThe artist will be joined in conversation by noted art theorist and scholar Jennifer González\, professor of history of art and visual culture.

SUMMARY:Spring Exhibitions at the Institute of the Arts and Sciences
DESCRIPTION:Visit the IAS\, UCSC’s premier art galleries\, for our spring exhibitions. On view April 10–August 16\, 2026 are three diverse and interdisciplinary shows: Libia Posada: Everything is Going Right\, the first US solo exhibition by the Colombia-based artist and medical doctor; Gina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj\, a site-specific and immersive exploration of the Haitian kreyol conception of rasanblaj; and Ronaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\, a mixed-media exhibition emerging at the intersections of Black poetics\, performance\, and visual art. \nThe IAS Galleries are open Wednesday-Sunday\, 12 pm – 5 pm. Admission is free to the public. \nLibia Posada: Everything is Going Right\nLibia Posada’s first solo exhibition in the United States features installations\, sculptures\, and drawings meticulously constructed from surgical instruments\, gauze bandages\, crutches\, used books\, and domestic picture frames. The new and existing works in the exhibition powerfully stitch together the personal\, social\, and political disorders and afflictions that currently trouble the world\, from the wars that resonate across the globe to the violences of aging in US prisons.  \nGina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins & Disentanglements\nThe internationally-lauded work of humanities professor Gina Athena Ulysse is on view as a premier Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\nCollage is both a material practice and a structural interrogation in the Faculty Spotlight Exhibition artworks by literature professor Ronaldo V. Wilson. In video\, painting\, and installation\, layers and folds conceal and reveal\, delving into the experience\, both bodily and emotive\, of living in times of violence.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Music On The Meadow (MOTM) presents “Episode 0: Music with the Meadow.” MOTM showcases engagement from students\, artists\, scientists\, scholars\, and culture bearers\, who engage in “listening with the meadow” through genre-defying works. MOTM is a site for low-key (but not low-quality or low-impact) celebration\, gathering\, mourning\, remembering\, rethinking\, unlearning. \nThis event is presented as part of the April in Santa Cruz Festival of Creative Music.\n—\nADMISSION\n– Free and open to the public\n– Attend in-person at Kretschmer Plaza\, the outdoor courtyard adjacent to the Music Center Recital Hall at UC Santa Cruz\n– Open admission (no ticket or registration required)\n—\nPARKING\n– Parking by permit or ParkMobile\n– Arts Lot #126 is the closest parking lot to the event\n– Visitors with DMV placards or plates may park for free in DMV spaces\, Medical spaces\, or ParkMobile spaces without additional payment\, or in timed zones for longer than the posted time.\n– UCSC affiliates must purchase their permits before arriving at the event in order to receive their discounted UCSC rate.
