SUMMARY:Visualizing Abolition Screening Series: Beyond Access
DESCRIPTION:On view in the IAS Screening Room is a selection of short films curated by Visualizing Abolition Visiting Faculty Fellow Dr. Pooja Rangan. \nPrisons deny and censor the access of those trapped inside them—to information\, to intimacy\, to community\, to meaningful work\, to nourishment of all kinds\, and perhaps most cruelly\, to care. This program assembles a series of films\, including works by filmmakers incarcerated in California as well as others without that lived experience. Together\, these works confront the debilitating impacts of these restrictions and reveal how the disabling logic of the prison is extended to other institutional spaces (the hospital\, the university)\, turning access into a scarce commodity by enclosing what should be held in common. SUMMARY:Spring Exhibitions at the Institute of the Arts and Sciences
DESCRIPTION:Visit the IAS\, UCSC’s premier art galleries\, for our spring exhibitions. On view April 10–August 16\, 2026 are three diverse and interdisciplinary shows: Libia Posada: Everything is Going Right\, the first US solo exhibition by the Colombia-based artist and medical doctor; Gina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj\, a site-specific and immersive exploration of the Haitian kreyol conception of rasanblaj; and Ronaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\, a mixed-media exhibition emerging at the intersections of Black poetics\, performance\, and visual art. \nThe IAS Galleries are open Wednesday-Sunday\, 12 pm – 5 pm. Admission is free to the public. \nLibia Posada: Everything is Going Right\nLibia Posada’s first solo exhibition in the United States features installations\, sculptures\, and drawings meticulously constructed from surgical instruments\, gauze bandages\, crutches\, used books\, and domestic picture frames. The new and existing works in the exhibition powerfully stitch together the personal\, social\, and political disorders and afflictions that currently trouble the world\, from the wars that resonate across the globe to the violences of aging in US prisons.  \nGina Athena Ulysse: A Redwoods Rasanblaj: Origins & Disentanglements\nThe internationally-lauded work of humanities professor Gina Athena Ulysse is on view as a premier Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. The site-specific installation\, produced in community from things collected\, found\, purchased and donated\, centers on the Haitian concept of rasanblaj\, a form of assembly and collage that transcends the formal use of materials to draw together people\, spirits\, and ideas.  \nRonaldo V. Wilson: There Are No Words\, But Melodies\nCollage is both a material practice and a structural interrogation in the Faculty Spotlight Exhibition artworks by literature professor Ronaldo V. Wilson. In video\, painting\, and installation\, layers and folds conceal and reveal\, delving into the experience\, both bodily and emotive\, of living in times of violence.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Puppets\, Performance\, Percussion: Asia-Pacific Interculturalism\, Avant-gardism\, and the Center for World Music\nAs the West Coast exploded with the Summer of Love and Vietnam War protests\, the Center for World Music’s concept of “bimusicality” brought Asian performance masters and American avant-gardists to train American students. Julie Taymor’s The Lion King on Broadway and Lou Harrison’s Coyote Stories are just two intercultural results. The teachings of Balasaraswati\, Ravi Shankar\, Ali Akbar Khan\, Undang Sumarna\, and Ki Tjokrowasito\, prompted intercultural revolutions in West Coast performance\, practice\, and university curriculums\, including at UC Santa Cruz. \nRegister to attend in-person or virtual\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. for guests attending in person\nLecture: 7 p.m.\nFollowed by a reception for in person guests\nFree and open to the public\nParking is $11 \nPresented by the UC Santa Cruz Emeriti Association \n  \nKathy Foley is distinguished research professor emerita at UC Santa Cruz. She has edited the Asian Theatre Journal\, curated exhibits for the National Geographic Society\, and performed at Indonesian National Wayang (puppetry) Festivals\, the Asian Art Museum\, and the Smithsonian. Her research has been supported by Fulbright\, Yale Institute of Sacred Music\, and Edward A. Dickson Emeriti awards. She is also a Punch and Judy professor.

SUMMARY:Visualizing Abolition Screening Series: Beyond Access
DESCRIPTION:On view in the IAS Screening Room is a selection of short films curated by Visualizing Abolition Visiting Faculty Fellow Dr. Pooja Rangan. \nPrisons deny and censor the access of those trapped inside them—to information\, to intimacy\, to community\, to meaningful work\, to nourishment of all kinds\, and perhaps most cruelly\, to care. This program assembles a series of films\, including works by filmmakers incarcerated in California as well as others without that lived experience. Together\, these works confront the debilitating impacts of these restrictions and reveal how the disabling logic of the prison is extended to other institutional spaces (the hospital\, the university)\, turning access into a scarce commodity by enclosing what should be held in common. SUMMARY:VMCC Talk with Maggie Cao—Sepia: Biotic Media and Ocean Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Sepia is a term used to describe inks of a rich\, brown color\, but few know that this artistic usage is taken from the animal world\, where sepia refers to a genus of cuttlefish—a nod to the long history of extracting melanin fluid from cephalopods for drawing and writing. This talk uses cuttlefish ink as a vehicle for rethinking human-ocean relations in the mid nineteenth century\, tracing flows between Victor Hugo’s maritime drawings made in the Channel Islands to paleontological discoveries and scientific illustrations on nearby coastlines. During the nineteenth century\, the expansion of fisheries and the growth of marine biology fostered public interest in the strangeness of cephalopods\, or “devil fish\,” whose inkiness was associated with artistic creation. Experiments with biotic media\, the talk argues\, were efforts to conceptualize the nonhuman environment of the ocean. \nThis event is presented as part of the Visual & Media Cultures Colloquium (VMCC) Series.\n—\nADMISSION\n– FREE and open to the public\n– Located in Porter College Rm. SUMMARY:Questions that Matter - How to Live Long and Prosper: Lessons from a Star Trek Opera
DESCRIPTION:What do we need to live a fulfilling life? This essential question of the humanities feels especially pressing now\, on the precipice of profound changes to our planet\, our bodies\, and our sense of human exceptionality. Join us for a conversation — and a music-and-drama masterclass — about speculative fiction from the Star Trek world\, the myth of Orpheus\, and what the operatic form can teach us about intelligence\, humanity\, and the good life. The evening will feature UC Santa Cruz faculty\, Ben Leeds Carson (Professor of Music)\, Camilla A. Hawthorne (Associate Professor of Sociology)\, and Pranav Anand (THI Faculty Director and Professor of Linguistics)\, along with librettist Perre DiCarlo. \n \nThis event follows the “The Trial of Spock — An Opera Workshop” on March 8th. The opera creators will present five scenes from an opera-in-progress by Ben Leeds Carson\, Perre DiCarlo\, and Lincoln and Lee Taiz. With co-authors John DeLancey\, Camilla Hawthorne\, and Michael Chemers. \nQuestions That Matter is a public humanities series developed by The Humanities Institute and the community of Santa Cruz. It brings together\, in conversation\, two or more UC Santa Cruz scholars with community residents and students to explore questions that matter to all of us.

DESCRIPTION:Audiences are invited to the free winter quarter chamber concert at the Music Center Recital Hall at UC Santa Cruz to hear selections from multiple ensembles\, including the following: \nUCSC Percussion Ensemble\nWilliam Winant\, director \nUCSC Celtic Chamber Music Ensemble\nBill Coulter\, director \nUCSC Classical Guitar Ensemble \nChristopher Mallet\, director\nWilliam Coulter\, steel string guitar\nCaila Bigelman\, violin soloist \nUCSC Horn Ensemble\nSusan Vollmer\, director \nUCSC Central Asian Ensemble\nTanya Merchant\, director \nUCSC Experimental Music Ensemble\nAmy Beal\, director\nRicky Lomelí\, special guest/drum set \n—\nADMISSION\n– Free and open to the public.\n– Open seating (no ticket required).\n– Doors are scheduled to open 30 minutes prior to event start time.\n—\nPARKING\n– Parking by permit\, ParkMobile\, or $11 cash/credit via the on-site parking attendant\n– Arts Lot #126 is the closest parking lot to the event\n– Visitors with DMV placards or plates may park for free in DMV spaces\, Medical spaces\, or ParkMobile spaces without additional payment\, or in timed zones for longer than the posted time.\n– UCSC affiliates must purchase their permits before arriving at the event in order to receive their discounted UCSC rate. DESCRIPTION:Join Banana Slug alumni filmmaker Ben Judkins (Kresge ’17\, film and digital media) and “ciggy board” creator Taylor Lane for a screening of their award-winning documentary\, The Cigarette Surfboard (presented by the California Coastal Commission‘s Whale Tail Grant). \n5:00-6:00 PM | alumni meet & greet with light refreshments\n6:00-7:35 PM | film screening\n7:35-8:30 PM | filmmaker discussion\n8:30-9:00 PM | mingle \nREGISTER\nABOUT THE FILM\nAfter a young designer realizes that a surfboard – which he crafted from thousands of littered cigarette butts picked up off California beaches – could captivate the eyes of millions across the globe\, he decides to use it as the impetus to do something more. The Cigarette Surfboards become a platform to spark ocean stewardship and the symbol of a campaign to hold Big Tobacco accountable for their toxic\, plastic waste. Surfing is the medium\, but the message is universal. \nSmall decisions and actions\, like littering a cigarette butt\, cumulatively can have a large impact\, for better or for worse. This immersive documentary provides viewers an up close experience of the ocean through surfers’ eyes\, to amplify a message of urgency and possibility regarding the ocean’s wellbeing. As our ocean faces mounting threats\, and surfing continues to grow\, we as surfers have a responsibility to protect it. \nABOUT THE FILMMAKER\nRaised in Northern California\, at age eight\, Ben Judkins found an old camcorder and discovered the medium to explore and create. After years of videotaping friends skateboarding and surfing\, Ben landed at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, majoring in Film & Digital Media. His senior film “Marshall” earned the Dean’s Award\, and also won “Best Locally-Produced Work” at the 2017 Santa Cruz Film Festival. Ben is an avid surfer who believes in the power of visual storytelling to move people to action. The Cigarette Surfboard documentary is an opportunity to inspire a generation of surfers to be stewards of the sea.
