SUMMARY:POSTPONED—Celebrating Agroecology: A book talk with Author Bruce H. Jennings and Mayor Fred Keeley
DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed. \nJoin us for a conversation with Author Bruce H. Jennings and Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley about Jennings’ new book\, Revolutionary Science: The Struggle for Agroecology in the Americas. \nRSVP \nAbout the book\nAs the climate crisis becomes more urgent and issues of social inequality intensify\, Revolutionary Science: The Struggle for Agroecology in the Americas shows how agroecology offers hope rooted in a deeper understanding of ecology\, society\, and collective struggle. In the 1940s\, a US-backed campaign spread industrial agriculture across the Americas\, dismantling traditional farming systems that had sustained campesino communities for generations. The result was ecological damage\, cultural loss\, and deepened inequality. Amid this devastation\, a group of Latin American scientists chose another path. Working alongside farmers\, Indigenous communities\, and social movements\, they helped shape a new vision — agroecology: a science grounded in ecology\, cultural respect\, and political commitment to those most marginalized. Revolutionary Science tells their story and asks a vital question: Can agroecology thrive as both a science and a movement strong enough to advance livelihood for millions of campesinos and many others across the Americas?

SUMMARY:Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with co-editors Liz Carlisle and Aubrey Streit Krug and contributor Tim Crews about their new book Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods. Following the conversation\, we’ll enjoy a tasting of perennial treats\, and copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. \nLiving Roots makes the case for putting perennial foods at the center of our farms and our plates\, to add flavor and nutrients to our diets while reducing emissions and making our food system more resilient to climate change and economic uncertainty. With contributions from James Beard Award-winning chefs\, Macarthur genius grant-winning scientists\, and a host of farmers who are leading the way on perennializing agriculture\, the book takes readers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the largest food forest in the United States\, the test plots developing the first commercial perennial grains\, and the vast grasslands where Indigenous communities are returning bison to their prairie homelands. In the process\, each contributor shares their unique story of learning with these long-lived plants about how to root deeper in the face of existential challenges\, speaking directly to readers charting their own path on a rapidly changing planet. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Field Trip to ALBA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opportunity to visit the Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA) in Salinas! \nALBA is a non-profit whose mission is to create economic opportunity for aspiring organic farmers and ag professionals — many of whom are local field workers and first-generation college students — through land-based education in the heart of the Salinas Valley. On this field trip we will learn about their programs which cover: organic farm production\, nutrient management and irrigation\, farm business\, and marketing.
