SUMMARY:Bruce H. Jennings in conversation with Mayor Fred Keeley
DESCRIPTION:Join us and Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley for a conversation with Author Bruce H. Jennings about his new book\, Revolutionary Science: The Struggle for Agroecology in the Americas. \nAbout the book\nAs the climate crisis becomes more urgent and issues of social inequality intensify\, Revolutionary Science: The Struggle for Agroecology in the Americas shows how agroecology offers hope rooted in a deeper understanding of ecology\, society\, and collective struggle. In the 1940s\, a US-backed campaign spread industrial agriculture across the Americas\, dismantling traditional farming systems that had sustained campesino communities for generations. The result was ecological damage\, cultural loss\, and deepened inequality. Amid this devastation\, a group of Latin American scientists chose another path. Working alongside farmers\, Indigenous communities\, and social movements\, they helped shape a new vision — agroecology: a science grounded in ecology\, cultural respect\, and political commitment to those most marginalized. Revolutionary Science tells their story and asks a vital question: Can agroecology thrive as both a science and a movement strong enough to advance livelihood for millions of campesinos and many others across the Americas?\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:North Stars of Emancipation: Navigating Movements and Institutions to Change Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Antonio Roman-Alcalá has been participating in food and farming movements in California for over two decades. He’s founded urban farms\, taught organic horticulture\, and made documentary films about why food systems continue to be unsustainable.  \nMore recently\, he’s turned towards participatory\, movement-based research to develop an understanding of what “emancipation” might mean for those who’ve long faced the brunt of food systems injustices\, especially in a context of rising right wing\, racist politics at the national level. \nThe result is North Stars of Emancipation: California’s Diverse Food and Farming Movements in Times of Racial Reckoning\, Antonio’s book now out on MIT Press. You can find info on the book here. \nThe book describes a shift in recent decades of US food movement politics – driven by the greater inclusion and influence of people of color – towards more radical political ideals of anti-capitalism and anti-colonialism\, and skepticism of the state as a tool for emancipation. North Stars tackles questions of social movement convergence amidst the recent right wing rise\, and offers strategic and scholarly lessons based on decades of experience and analysis. \nCome join Antonio in conversation with other thinkers and doers\, about organizing for food systems transformation\, fraught times of political regression\, reckoning with legacies of racism\, and holding onto radical visions for a world otherwise. \nFeaturing: \nLeonard Diggs\, Long time Farmer and Educator\nMireya Gomez-Contreras\, Esperanza Farms\, Community Farm in Watsonville\nMaywa Montenegro de Wit\, Critical agrarian studies scholar at UCSC

SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at the UCSC Farm
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a day of harvesting\, cleaning and storing dahlia tubers for the winter. After an incredible season of blooms\, we will have cut back and lifted our dahlias\, but they still need a bit of care and processing to be ready for storage until they are planted again in the spring. Participants will help with all aspects of this process and in exchange will learn about dahlia flower classes\, year round life cycles\, propagation methods\, dividing tuber clusters\, and all that you need to do to store your tubers so that they will be in prime condition for replanting the following year. Please come prepared to join us dressed in layers\, wearing closed toed shoes\, and with gloves if you desire. All other tools will be provided. \nLEARN MORE AND RSVP
