SUMMARY:Venezuela: Contradictions of Regime Change Without a Change of Regime\, A Discussion with Dr. Gabriel Hetland
DESCRIPTION:*UPDATE!* New date! Now on Thursday\, February 26th\, 12- 1:30pm at the Stevenson Event Center. \nFollowing the January 3 US attack and kidnapping of its president\, Nicolás Maduro\, Venezuela has been transformed into something approaching a protectorate of the US. In this bizarre regime change without a change of regime\, Maduro’s former vice president\, Delcy Rodriguez\, is allied -under explicitly coercive threats- with Donald Trump in his brazenly neocolonial plunder of Venezuela’s oil resources. This talk will explore the political and economic contradictions of this dangerous and unusual situation\, which poses grave risks to Venezuela\, Latin America and the world. \nGabriel Hetland is associate professor of Africana\, Latin American\, Caribbean\, and Latinx Studies at SUNY Albany and author of Democracy on the Ground: Local Politics in Latin America’s Left Turn.

Findings reveal gaps between institutional commitments and student realities\, and she offers actionable recommendations for more equitable\, transfer-receptive practices.

DESCRIPTION:Trump’s second term has been marked by a dramatic increase in immigration enforcement operations\, including the deployment of federal and national guard troops to major cities across the United States. Ramped-up ICE raids have resulted in injuries\, deaths\, and the disappearance of migrants and non migrants alike. As legal challenges demanding the cessation of indiscriminate workplace and neighborhood raids have largely failed\, how are workers and communities fighting back? SUMMARY:Indignant Liberalism: Political Protest and Generational Change in El Salvador
DESCRIPTION:In 2013 anthropologist Ellen Moodie embedded with indignados—young middle-class protestors demanding that the government live up to its liberal commitments—to better understand the course of political change since the civil war. In this talk she discusses her forthcoming book\, which starts with her work with urban activists of what she calls the “post-postwar” generation. She argues that theirs is only the latest demographic disappointed with liberalism in practice. Moodie looks back not only to the 1992 United Nations-brokered peace accords\, which ended El Salvador’s twelve-year civil war\, but also to a nineteenth-century “racial liberalism” that saw descendants of colonists “civilizing” Indigenous people while dispossessing them of lands and mobilizing them for labor. Today\, the failure to make good on the promises of postwar liberalism has inspired robust support for strongman Nayib Bukele. Moodie argues that El Salvador’s case\, though inflected by local concerns\, is not unique. Rather\, it is another stark demonstration of how liberalism’s imaginary social contract gives rise to populist authoritarianism. \nEllen Moodie is Associate Professor of Anthropology and director of the Global Studies program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has been carrying our research in El Salvador for more than 30 years. Her publications include El Salvador in the Aftermath of Peace: Crime\, Uncertainty\, and the Transition to Democracy (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2010) and the co-edited volume Central America in the New Millennium: Living Transition Reimagining Democracy (Berghahn/CEDLA\, 2013).

From organizing Dust Bowl refugees to helping Japanese-Americans find jobs and housing after release from the internment camps to challenging KKK activity by organizing civil unity leagues in California that led to the integration of local school boards across California’s Citrus Belt\, Ross’ work with the Mendez case laid the foundation for the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown vs Board of Education and his mentorship of legendary organizers Cesar Chavez and Huerta led to the success of the United Farmworkers. \nGenerations of organizers and activists\, many of whom are featured in AMERICAN AGITATORS\, stand on the shoulders of Ross and his innovative organizing tactics. SUMMARY:Queer Emergent: Scandalous Stories from Twilight of AIDS in Peru: Book Celebration and Conversation with Professor Justin Perez
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Huerta Center Faculty Awardee Professor Justin Perez (Latin America and Latino Studies Department) presents his new book\, Queer Emergent: Scandalous Stories from Twilight of AIDS in Peru. In Queer Emergent\, Justin Perez explores how advances in HIV prevention work alongside broader economic and political shifts in global health to shape queer subjectivities. Drawing on ethnographic research among gay and transgender communities in urban Amazonian Peru\, Perez describes how queer social worlds emerge through scandalous storytelling—a practice of exaggerating and embellishing stories about everyday life that transgresses social norms and hierarchies. Perez shows that through such storytelling\, gay and transgender communities contested the assumptions of global HIV prevention’s shift from the provision of costly antiretrovirals to the mitigation of social conditions like discrimination and stigma. He argues that the global ambition to “End AIDS” by 2030 is not just a technical project oriented at ending the epidemic\, but also a project of sexual subjectification and ongoing social transformation. By taking seriously the scandalous stories that gay and transgender Peruvians circulated as they responded to new forms of HIV prevention\, Perez reveals how they imagine possibilities of what could be as the effort to end AIDS continues to play out in the present. \nThere will be a short reception following the discussion. SUMMARY:Penumbra de la memoria: Brown Bag with Maya Scherr-Willson
DESCRIPTION:During this presentation\, Maya Scherr-Willson (PhD Student in the Film and Media Department) will show material and reflect on insights from a research trip that laid the groundwork for Penumbra de la memoria\, a feature documentary to be shot this summer. The project reunites eight women fifty years after they were held as political prisoners together during Argentina’s last military dictatorship to film an adaptation from memory of their prison-era performance of The House of Bernarda Alba by Federico García Lorca. The group\, engaged in collective work\, will be the protagonist of the film that chronicles the political memory that erupts through their creative process.
