DESCRIPTION:Puppets\, Performance\, Percussion: Asia-Pacific Interculturalism\, Avant-gardism\, and the Center for World Music\nAs the West Coast exploded with the Summer of Love and Vietnam War protests\, the Center for World Music’s concept of “bimusicality” brought Asian performance masters and American avant-gardists to train American students. Julie Taymor’s The Lion King on Broadway and Lou Harrison’s Coyote Stories are just two intercultural results. The teachings of Balasaraswati\, Ravi Shankar\, Ali Akbar Khan\, Undang Sumarna\, and Ki Tjokrowasito\, prompted intercultural revolutions in West Coast performance\, practice\, and university curriculums\, including at UC Santa Cruz. \nRegister to attend in-person or virtual\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. for guests attending in person\nLecture: 7 p.m.\nFollowed by a reception for in person guests\nFree and open to the public\nParking is $11 \nPresented by the UC Santa Cruz Emeriti Association \n  \nKathy Foley is distinguished research professor emerita at UC Santa Cruz. She is a member of honor for UNIMA-International\, joining previous puppeteers such as Jim Henson. She has edited the Asian Theatre Journal\, curated exhibits for the National Geographic Society\, and performed at Indonesian National Wayang (puppetry) Festivals\, the Asian Art Museum\, and the Smithsonian. Her research has been supported by Fulbright\, Yale Institute of Sacred Music\, and Edward A. Dickson Emeriti awards. She is also a Punch and Judy professor.

SUMMARY:History of Science Lecture with Jennifer Derr
DESCRIPTION:World Wounds: The Damming of the Nile River and the Transformation of Medicine\nThe damming of the Nile River transformed agriculture and human health in 20th-century Egypt. While dams enabled year-round irrigation and provided hydroelectricity\, the prevalence of parasitic disease also skyrocketed. Professor Derr explores the effects of damming the Nile on the health of Egyptians and the impact of large-scale environmental transformation on the knowledge and practice that made medicine during the 20th century. \nRegister to attend in-person or virtual\nIn Person Reception: 5:30 p.m.\nLecture 6 p.m.\nIn-person and virtual\nFree and open to the public\nParking is $6 \n  \nThe 2026 Nauenberg History of Science Lecture is presented by the UC Santa Cruz Emeriti Association and co-sponsored by the Center for the Middle East and North Africa\, History Department\, Humanities Division\, Environmental Studies Department\, Science and Justice Research Center\, and The Humanities Institute. \n  \n  \n \nJennifer Derr is an associate professor in the History Department at UC Santa Cruz. Her first book\, The Lived Nile: Environment\, Disease\, and Material Colonial Economy in Egypt\, won the Middle East Political Economy Book Prize. In 2019\, the National Science Foundation awarded Derr a History of Science at the Interface of Biomedical and Environmental Concerns CAREER grant to support her research. In 2024-25\, she was a fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Kicking the Prow: Reflections on a Life in Conversation with Past and Present People and Other Creatures\nIn this lecture\, Distinguished Research Professor Diane Gifford-Gonzalez reflects on fifty-five years of zooarchaeology work\, studying animal remains from archaeological sites to explore how past people and their kin interacted. While varying in geographical and theoretical foci\, a common thread runs through what she believes are her most influential contributions to archaeology.
