SUMMARY:Inspirando the Colega Mindset: Co-creating Change through Equitable Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:This is the 2nd session of a 2-part Student-led Equity Talks Series titled “From Voice to Power: Students as Leaders\, Knowledge Holders\, and Change Agents.” \nStudent Advisory Equipo\, launched in 2025 through the HSI Title V CULTURA grant\, is made up of six undergraduate student advocates. Grounded by their lived experience and experiential knowledge\, they serve as collaborators who play a critical role in shaping culturally affirming programs\, policies\, and decisions that impact student life. UCSC’s Equipo draws inspiration from the student-led transformation work at Pasadena City College (PCC) and Dr. Desiree Zuniga\, whose testimonios\, insights\, and guidance shaped the foundation of UCSC’s own initiative. UCSC’s Equipo is part of a growing movimiento committed to empowering student leaders as partners and collaborators in advancing servingness and institutional transformation. \nIn its first year\, Equipo members have engaged across multiple campus initiatives\, including Pan Dulce Fridays and the HSI Survey Coding Project. This presentation will invite participants to move beyond siloed efforts toward a more integrated\, collaborative campus community that empowers students as essential partners in shaping more equitable institutional practices. \nPlease register to receive a calendar invitation and Zoom details. \n  \nYou Belong Here: The programs and services described here are open to all\, consistent with state and federal law\, as well as the University of California’s nondiscrimination policies. Every initiative—whether a student service\, faculty program\, or community event—is designed to be accessible\, inclusive\, and respectful of all identities. \nTo learn more\, please visit UC Nondiscrimination Statement or Nondiscrimination Policy for UC Publications.

SUMMARY:Servingness en Acción: Nurturing Student Leadership Rooted in Cariño\, Cultura\, y Comunidad
DESCRIPTION:Presented by El Centro Lead Student Coordinators\, Joselyn Salgado Lomeli and Giovanna Fernandez \nThis is the 1st session of a 2-part Student-led HSI Equity Talks Series titled “From Voice to Power: Students as Leaders\, Knowledge Holders\, and Change Agents.” \nEl Centro interns are student leaders who draw upon their cultural strengths and lived experiences to organize impactful programs that foster belonging\, support retention\, and enhance campus climate at UC Santa Cruz. The internship cultivates community\, identity affirmation\, and authentic\, culturally grounded leadership. For 30 years\, interns have advanced the university’s servingness mission while gaining professional skills\, confidence\, and clarity in their goals. \nMost importantly\, the program centers culturally sustaining practices that connect identity to leadership and develop justice-oriented leaders committed to uplifting their communities. This student-led presentation highlights how the internship supports leadership development\, holistic success\, and post-graduation outcomes through frameworks such as Razalogía\, Community Cultural Wealth\, and Authentic Cariño\, positioning interns as co-creators and knowledge holders in advancing servingness. \nPlease register to receive a calendar invitation and Zoom details. \n  \nYou Belong Here: The programs and services described here are open to all\, consistent with state and federal law\, as well as the University of California’s nondiscrimination policies. SUMMARY:[HSI Equity Talk] Beyond Invisibility: Reimagining Servingness to Support Undocumented Transfer Students
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Valeria Alonso Blanco\, Dr. Saskias Casanova\, and Jesus Morales \nThis interactive talk draws on a qualitative study conducted with undocumented Latinx transfer students at a California four-year HSI. Using focus groups and reflexive thematic analysis\, we examined how these students perceive and experience institutional support\, belonging\, and barriers related to their intersectional identities. This session is designed around three goals: (1) assessing what staff and administrators currently know about undocumented students on campus\, particularly undocumented transfer students; (2) building shared knowledge through our research findings and student voices; and (3) connecting participants to existing campus resources and identifying concrete opportunities for cross-departmental collaboration. We will share key resources and actionable strategies for holistically serving undocumented transfer students. \nPlease register online. The Zoom information and a calendar invitation will be sent to those who RSVP. \nYou Belong Here: The programs and services described here are open to all\, consistent with state and federal law\, as well as the University of California’s nondiscrimination policies. Every initiative—whether a student service\, faculty program\, or community event—is designed to be accessible\, inclusive\, and respectful of all identities. \nTo learn more\, please visit UC Nondiscrimination Statement or Nondiscrimination Policy for UC Publications.
