SUMMARY:Beautiful Universe - An astrophotography exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Universe is a pop-up exhibit in collaboration with the UC Santa Cruz Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics that will be on display at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History from May 21 to 31.\nIn over more than 20 photos\, you will see galaxies\, novae\, supernovae\, reflection and emission nebulae\, and interstellar dust clouds that give birth to new stars and planets. They are artistic images filled with scientific information. The astrophotography exhibit bridges the gap that often exists in our minds between art and science. \nAsk an astronomer! Astronomers will be on site at the Museum of Art and History in downtown Santa Cruz from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends (May 23\, 24\, 30\, and 31) to answer your questions. \nImages are by Steve Mandel and Bob Fera\, Deep Space Remote Observatories\, and once the pop-up exhibit concludes\, the photos on display will be permanently installed on the UC Santa Cruz campus\, courtesy of Steve Mandel\, research associate for the UC Santa Cruz Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and sponsor of the Mandel Lecture Series. \nLearn more.

DESCRIPTION:Science In the Neighborhood\nA public lecture series hosted quarterly by the UC Santa Cruz Science Division \nThe earthquake problem\nPresentation by Emily Brodsky\, Professor\, UC Santa Cruz\nQ&A with Stefano Profumo\, Associate Dean of Science\, UC Santa Cruz \nRegister here. \nEarthquake prediction has simultaneously remained both the central\, unsolved problem in seismology and the issue that communities care about most—especially here in Northern California. Earth & Planetary Sciences Professor Emily Brodsky will discuss what we do and do not know about when earthquakes will happen. She will explain what we understand about the basic mechanics of faults and how drilling into faults has transformed our understanding of how earthquakes happen. Her talk will also explore how the machine learning revolution is powering a transformation in forecasting aftershocks\, as well as look ahead toward the kind of instrumentation and approaches that offer the most promise for the next big advances. \nThe event is in-person only. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on June 24\, 2026\, at 5:30 pm at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego\, for a special reception with UC Santa Cruz Nobel Laureate Carol Greider and members of the UCSC Department of Molecular\, Cell and Developmental Biology faculty. \nCarol won the Nobel Prize in 2009 for discovering how the tips of our chromosomes — called telomeres — protect the DNA inside our cells. Think of telomeres like the plastic caps on shoelaces that keep them from fraying. She also discovered telomerase\, the enzyme that rebuilds these caps as our cells divide. Her work has transformed how scientists understand aging\, cancer\, and what keeps our cells healthy over a lifetime. \nThis event is open to all UC Santa Cruz Alumni\, San Diego area supporters\, and interested industry representatives in town for the BIO International Convention. \nRSVP Today!
