SUMMARY:December Slugs and Steins with Richard Mahon (Cowell ’78)
DESCRIPTION:Interactive Reflection on our Collective Memories: 60 Years of UCSC\nFor this month’s Slugs & Steins\, we will close out the year and say goodbye to the first quarter of the 21st century with UCSC alumnus Richard Mahon. Richard will guide us in reflecting on UCSC after 60 years and on our collective time attending the university. \nWhether you graduated as part of the pioneer class or only in the past few years\, this month’s Slugs and Steins will ask you to look at how your experience studying at UC Santa Cruz helped shape and mold your life. Richard will share his perspectives about the experiences of UCSC students from both his time there as a student and instructor\, and as a parent of a UCSC graduate. He will incorporate lessons from an English composition class he is currently teaching at Allan Hancock College\, a California community college in Santa Maria\, which looks at how family and education are crucial determinants of a person’s life. Richard will invite alumni to share what UCSC has meant to them\, and to reflect on what alumni can do to keep the promise of a transformative UC education for young people coming of age in California today. Please be prepared to share your thoughts and experiences if you wish. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:October Slugs & Steins with Professor Kimberly Lau
DESCRIPTION:Race and the European Fairy Tale: The Making of a White Genre \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Kimberly Lau offers intertwined readings of several cognate fairy tales that revolve around true and false brides\, beginning with Black slaves and white fairies in 17th-century Naples and tracing their evolution into (implicitly raced but unmarked) kind and unkind girls in 19th-century Germany. Through her readings\, Lau illustrates some of the ways that culturally specific\, historical ideas about race\, racial thinking\, and racism have contributed to the development of the European fairy tale as a genre as well as to the creation of the fairy tale’s enduringly white world.

SUMMARY:September Slugs and Steins with Professor Javier González-Rocha
DESCRIPTION:How can flying robots help us track the air we breathe—and the pollutants we can't see? In this talk\, I’ll share how our team uses aerial robotic systems—commonly known as drones—to measure wind patterns and detect airborne pollutants in places that are hard to reach with traditional monitoring equipment. These systems are helping us better understand how toxic and climate pollutants move through the atmosphere\, and how they affect both human health and the environment. \nFrom wildfire smoke drifting across communities to methane leaks from dairy farms and oil fields\, these emissions are often poorly monitored—especially in rural or overburdened areas. Our low-cost\, adaptable drone systems offer a new way to fill that gap. By combining real-time flight data\, environmental sensors\, and advanced modeling\, we can generate targeted\, on-demand measurements that inform air quality assessments and improve emissions tracking. \nThis work sits at the intersection of engineering\, environmental science\, and community collaboration—with the goal of building tools that empower people and support climate resilience from the ground up.

SUMMARY:August Slugs & Steins with Professor Nancy N. Chen
DESCRIPTION:Breathing in the Anthropocene: Reflections on Breath\, Air\, and Vitality \nThis presentation examines breathing in the present moment when humans vastly transform Earth ecosystems that impact health and well-being. Atmospheric transformations via worsened air highlight connections of breath with health. How might breath be shaped by cultural and individual experiences? Ethnographic research at the intersections of medical and environmental anthropology have renewed attention on energetic relations between bodies\, landscapes\, air\, and health\, especially the role of vital energy in qi\, prana\, or ha. In addition to these breath centered approaches\, we examine recent biomedical research on breath management across a broad range of complementary medicine and health interventions.

SUMMARY:July Slugs and Steins with Campus Architect Emeritus Frank Zwart (Cowell\, ’71)
DESCRIPTION:The Imagining and Making of a University Campus at Santa Cruz \nEvery alum has a story about how he or she first discovered and came to UC Santa Cruz. But the story of how the University of California came to Santa Cruz is a longer and much more involved one. Step into the Wayback Machine with UCSC’s Campus Architect Emeritus Frank Zwart (Cowell ’71) to hear the details of how the University’s Regents selected Santa Cruz as the site for their bold new experiment in public higher education\, and learn about the University's first steps in building its new home. Along the way you’ll pick up some interesting UCSC architectural history trivia and some hidden jewels from the campus archives. \nFrank Zwart\, FAIA\, FAUA\, served as campus architect at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, from 1988 until his retirement in 2010. Under his direction\, the campus nearly doubled in size\, adding nearly 2.4 million square feet of building space and renovating one million more\, while preserving its breathtaking site. A Pasadena\, California\, native\, Frank received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from UC Santa Cruz (Cowell College) in 1971 and his master’s in architecture from Princeton University. Prior to joining the design and construction staff at UCSC in 1985\, he worked in architectural firms in Princeton\, Los Angeles\, Santa Monica\, Aptos\, Philadelphia\, and Carmel.
