SUMMARY:It’s California Native Plant Month!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Norrie’s Gift and Garden Shop at the UCSC Arboretum & Botanic Garden for a pop up information booth about California’s Native Plants. \nHere at the Arboretum\, we like to say: if you plant it\, they will come\, and that is a fact we have seen borne out again and again in our gardens. Bring your questions about growing natives to the experts from the UC Master Gardeners and learn why when it comes to habitat\, California natives do it best!  \nThe Arboretum’s retail nursery will have lots of native plants for you to add to your garden to create waterwise habitats that capture the true essence of California!

SUMMARY:Jewels in the garden: A Darwinian natural history of humming birds with UCSC Professor Emeritus Bruce Lyon
DESCRIPTION:This presentation promises to be a super fun exploration of hummingbird natural history\, evolution\, and social behavior\, full of fascinating scientific information and colorful images of local and exotic hummingbirds from here and abroad. Though now officially a Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Santa Cruz\, we are lucky that Dr. Bruce Lyon has little inclination to stop studying bird ecology and evolution in ‘retirement’! During his rich career teaching and conducting research\, Bruce’s work continues to include the Lyon Lab’s 18+ year-long project studying golden-crowned sparrows at the Arboretum. \nBruce will give his entertaining presentation and slideshow in the Arboretum’s Hort 2 Meeting Hall and then take interested folks outside to one of the Arboretum’s “hummingbird hotspots” for an informal (humming)-birdwatching session and Q&A.

SUMMARY:March is Hummingbird Month at the UCSC Arboretum & Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:March is Hummingbird Month at the UCSC Arboretum & Botanic Garden \nThis time of year\, the Arboretum hosts both Anna’s and Allen’s hummingbirds\, the two most common species in Northern California. “The density of hummingbirds—the number per area in the Arboretum—is ridiculously high\,” says Bruce Lyon\, Professor Emeriti of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCSC. “You can watch them feeding on flowers\, you can watch their courtship\, you can watch them chasing different species. It’s a great opportunity to see some pretty amazing hummingbird biology.” \nIn celebration of this special time of year\, we invite you to visit the garden as much as possible! We will have presentations\, workshops\, and tours throughout the month. See our webpage for a schedule of activities and more information about hummingbirds and the abundance of plants at the Arboretum that attract them. \nWe will also feature hummingbird merchandise and hummingbird-attracting plants at our gift shop and nursery. Visit Norrie’s Gift & Garden Shop\, Tuesdays thru Sundays from 10 – 4. For more information visit: https://arboretum.ucsc.edu/garden-shop/ \nAll events are free with paid admission: Adults: $10\, Seniors $8 and Youth 4-17 $5. Current UCSC students are free. Rain cancels outdoor activities. \nCurrent Arboretum members are always free and enjoy other great benefits year-round!  Join Today at https://arboretum.ucsc.edu/get-involved/join-us/    \n  \n

SUMMARY:Day of Service at the UCSC Arboretum in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy\, please join us for a National Day of Service that encourages all Americans to volunteer and connect to improve their communities. \nThe UCSC Arboretum is hosting a one-day volunteer opportunity in our beautiful California Conservation Garden. By volunteering\, you become part of a community that directly supports the Arboretum’s mission to conserve native plants. We will be weeding areas around our native shrubs to give them more space to grow and thrive. \nIf interested in this service\, please fill out the required registration form on our website under “Events”. Please note\, at the event you will also need to complete a simple worker’s compensation form (may not apply if already an active Arboretum volunteer). \n\n\nVolunteers must be 18 years or older. \n\n\nEach volunteer must fill out this form separately. \n\n\nAccess to the CCG requires walking on a gravel road for approximately 1/3 mile. \n\n\nPlan on bringing a water bottle\, and wearing long pants and long sleeves to protect from sun and possible biting insects. Please also bring garden gloves and weeding tools if you have them\, otherwise they will be provided. Thank you and we look forward to meeting and working together with you! \nRegister \nLearn more

SUMMARY:Fall is for Planting!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the patio at Norrie’s Gift & Garden Shop at the Arboretum & Botanic Garden. \nThe UC Master Gardeners will host a pop-up booth to give information and answer questions about the benefits of planting in the fall and growing Mediterranean climate plants. \nWe know how hard it is to resist a beautiful blossom in the springtime\, but fall really is the best time for planting. By planting in the fall\, your plants will benefit from winter rains\, shorter days\, and cooler temperatures. This means they’ll be well established come springtime\, and you’ll be able to enjoy the blossoms in your own garden. \nNorrie’s features plants from the Mediterranean regions of South Africa\, Australia\, Chile\, and California. At this pop-up\, we will be selling a rare native iris for the first time. We will also have special offerings of Dudleya varieties grown here at the Arboretum from wild\, collected seed.
