SUMMARY:OLLI at UCSC Sunday Speaker Meeting
DESCRIPTION:OLLI at UCSC Hosts Bruce Lyon\, Professor\, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology\nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UC Santa Cruz invites the public to an in-person presentation from 10:00 to noon on Sunday\, March 15th\, in the Colleges Nine/Lewis Multipurpose Room at UCSC. \nJoin us for a social hour and a presentation titled\, Sparrows in the Mist: Complex Winter Social Behavior in a Little Brown Bird. \nOrnithologists often study breeding birds\, and as a result\, the winter ecology and social behavior of migratory birds is relatively understudied. A 22-year study of a population of golden-crowned sparrows that winter in the Arboretum of the University of California\, Santa Cruz was conducted. Each sparrow was given a unique combination of color bands\, which allowed us to identify individual birds in the wild and monitor their behavior and survival. Given that they survive migration and breeding\, individual sparrows return winter after winter to the arboretum and flock together with the same individuals as in previous years. We used innovative social network methods to understand the patterns of social organization and discovered remarkable social complexity in these birds that is similar in some ways to the societies of mammals\, including primates. \nProfessor Lyon seeks to understand the ecological and evolutionary basis of reproductive strategies and social behavior in animals\, particularly reproductive parasitism\, parental care\, and mating systems. One focus is to understand patterns of cooperation and reproductive parasitism in birds and insects. His passion for photography has also been very useful in his research. \nOLLI at UCSC is a community of adults from diverse educational\, occupational\, and geographic backgrounds who are devoted to the pursuit of learning. This event is free and open to the public. Bring a friend. Coffee and nibbles will be served. \nFor directions and free parking information\, visit: https://olli.ucsc.edu/monthly-gatherings/location-directions-and-parking/ \nFree and open to the public \n  \nPresented by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UC Santa Cruz.

SUMMARY:2026 Pre-Health School Fair
DESCRIPTION:Here is a chance to meet the recruiters in person! \nIf you are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or other health professions\, then take advantage of this opportunity to meet recruiters from health professional schools. Learn more about their respective health professional programs\, including medical schools\, and discuss ways in which to stand out in the application process. \nUndergraduate students\, graduate students\, and recent alumni are all welcome to attend! \nCurious about how to best prepare for the fair? \n1. Research the organization\nIdentify your top 3-5 pre-health and medical schools you’re interested in (but be sure to stay open to engaging with multiple programs at the event). Do your research by reviewing school websites (what’s the pre-health or medical school program mission? values?)\, admissions process and requirements\, and perhaps check out their social media for the latest news from the university/school. Pre-health and medical school representatives are impressed by potential candidates who take the time to do this!\n \n2. Prepare your introduction and questions\nReflect on what about each program resonates with you. Perhaps it’s the specific the curriculum they’re developing\, research they’re leading\, or the career path a specific degree program can lead you on. What relevant experiences do you have? How can you be of service to the pre-health or medical school? Exercise critical thinking skills to develop questions to ask recruiters. \n3. Plan your time\nBe sure to manage the time you have to ensure you’re able to connect with the pre-health and medical school programs you’re most interested in\, but remember to also be open to different schools you may not have heard of because they may be a smaller or out of area pre-health or medical school program. \nWant more support? \n  \n\nView our Pre-Health page\nVisit a peer coach during drop-in hours\nSchedule a career coaching appointment with a Career Engagement Specialist\nStay in the loop by following Career Success on Instagram\n\nYou will receive registration and additional information in your email from Career Success via Handshake. Please check your junk/spam folder if you are not receiving any communication.\n \n \nYou Belong Here: The programs and services described here are open to all\, consistent with state and federal law\, as well as the University of California’s nondiscrimination policies. Every initiative—whether a student service\, faculty program\, or community event—is designed to be accessible\, inclusive\, and respectful of all identities. \nTo learn more\, please visit UC Nondiscrimination Statement or Nondiscrimination Policy for UC Publications. \n\nQuestions? Send to csuccess@ucsc.edu or visit Career Success at Hahn 125 East Entrance\nNeed accessibility support? Let us know at slugtalent@ucsc.edu at least two weeks prior to the fair date. \n \nCareer fair registrations are made without endorsement\, direct or implied\, by Career Success or UCSC. Career Success educates students about various opportunities and ensures equity of access to campus recruiting activities for all employers who abide by our Employer Policies. Individual students are encouraged to determine which employers align with their diverse talents\, values\, and interests.

SUMMARY:Campo-Sano Climate Action Conference
DESCRIPTION:Campo-Sano Climate Action: A Regional Conference on California Farmworkers and the Environment will be co-hosted on October 4th\, 2025\, by the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and community partners \nThe conference will address the challenges of resilience amid the impacts of climate changes and the many other compounding risks farmworkers face. We will first review lessons learned from developing practical remedies and health promoter training designed to protect farming communities. Next\, we will involve all attendees in deliberating ways to scale up these protective efforts and make them sustainable amid mounting social and political challenges. \nProgram Description \nThe daylong conference will start with a morning session including testimonies of health promoters from local community-based organizations (CBO’s) and UCSC students. The frontline community health workers will describe the challenges they face in trying to protect farmworkers from environmental stressors in a context that is also overshadowed by chronic but intensifying political and economic vulnerabilities. \nA report will also be delivered by faculty on the two-year effort supported by funding from a Californian Climate Action grant to develop the Campo-Sano data app. This app is designed to inform local farm communities on climate related risks from exposures to high temperatures\, flooding\, wildfire air pollution\, groundwater contamination and other risks. We will showcase how this application can be used on mobile phones to support farmworkers who want to report their experience of these risks anonymously to state agencies and legal advocacy groups. \nA keynote luncheon presentation will be followed by a dialogue between representatives of state agencies and local community-based partners. Discussion panels and breakout sessions will engage these CBO’s and state agency officials to explore the extension of workplace protections for farmworkers and further regulation enforcement\, as well as the possible scale-up of Campo-Sano trainings across the state. This dialogue is critical in the face of the federal government’s retreat from protecting agricultural workers\, their employers and the food security they support for our wider community.

SUMMARY:45th Annual Dickens Universe featuring 'The Old Curiosity Shop'
DESCRIPTION:The Dickens Universe is a unique cultural event that brings together scholars\, teachers\, students\, and members of the general public for a week of stimulating discussion and festive social activity on the beautiful Santa Cruz campus of the University of California—all focused on one or two Victorian novels\, usually (but not always) one by Charles Dickens. \nIn 2025\, the Dickens Universe will feature The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens. Most people remember the novel for its famous and climactic death scene\, featuring one of Dickens's most beloved (and reviled) girl heroines\, Little Nell. It is a novel full of interesting scenes\, themes\, and curiosities. Featuring a gallery of Dickens's most grotesque characters\, it explores the idea of deformity\, especially as it contrasts with the angelic innocence and strangely embodied beauty of Little Nell. Its picaresque roots make it an adventure story as well as an allegory of moral journey; its interest in the urban landscape\, its pleasure\, and its dangers suggest Dickens's social concerns. \nNow in its 45th year of operation\, the Dickens Universe combines features of a scholarly conference\, a festival\, a book club\, and a summer camp. Participants include people of all ages and walks of life—distinguished scholars\, graduate students\, undergraduates\, retirees\, young professionals\, high school teachers\, and anyone who loves reading and enjoys long Victorian novels. \nHere are some things that make the Universe such a memorable experience. \n\nThe college lifestyle: participants live on campus\, eat together in the student dining hall\, and have time to meet and come to know each other in different ways.\nEveryone is reading the same book. We all have this one important thing in common.\nThe activities include formal lectures\, small discussion groups\, films\, daily Victorian teas\, performances\, and Victorian dancing.\n\nThe Universe offers a week of total immersion in the world of Victorian fiction with friendly\, like-minded colleagues in a beautiful setting. Whether we’re returning to a Dickens novel that everyone knows and loves or branching out into a Victorian novel by another author who might be less familiar\, during the Universe\, we build a community out of our passion for reading\, talking with one another\, and bringing Victorian culture to life.
