SUMMARY:UCSC Opera—Orpheus in the Underworld
DESCRIPTION:A rollicking and irreverent spoof of the Orpheus myth\, Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld is most famous as the origin of the “gallop infernal”—the music now strongly associated with the can-can dance. This operetta follows the unhappy (and unfaithful) union of Orpheus and Eurydice\, as the latter’s love affair with the god of the underworld results in Eurydice relocating to hell. Cowed by Public Opinion\, Orpheus makes an attempt to retrieve his wife from the underworld\, but Jupiter’s involvement\, along with many of the other gods of Olympus\, complicates matters further. \nThe UCSC Orchestra ensemble and voice students are conducted by Bruce Kiesling\, with direction by Sheila Willey.\nCostumes by Brooke Jennings\, wigs by Sharon Ridge and Jessica Carter\, and set/lighting design by David Dunning.\n—\nADMISSION\n– Attend in person at the UCSC Music Center Recital Hall.\n– General admission opera tickets available online through Eventbrite.\n– Free for UCSC students (ticket required).\n– Follow the Music Department on Eventbrite for notices and updates.\n– Doors are scheduled to open 30 minutes prior to event start time.\n– Ticket holders not seated at least 5 minutes before the advertised start time may forfeit their ticket/seat and no refund will be issued.\n—\nFULL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS\n– Th.\, May 28\, 7:30 p.m.\n– Fr.\, May 29\, 7:30 p.m.\n– Sa.\, May 30\, 7:30 p.m.\n– Su.\, May 31\, 3:00 p.m. matinee\n—\nPARKING\n– Arts Lot #126 is the closest parking lot to the event.\n– $5 ParkMobile Arts Special Event flat rate; cash/credit via parking attendant in Lot 126; or by valid UCSC permit.\n– Before arriving to UCSC\, we recommend downloading the ParkMobile App on Google Play or Apple App Store and setting up a profile with license plate and payment information.\n– Visitors with DMV placards or plates may park for free in DMV spaces\, Medical spaces\, or ParkMobile spaces without additional payment\, or in timed zones for longer than the posted time.\n– More information provided by UCSC Transportation & Parking Services.\n—\nThis program is open to all members of the public consistent with state and federal law. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Landesman Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Landesman Lecture: Integrating Mathematical and Scientific Research with Excellence in Teaching\nAncestral Matter\, Shared Humanity\, Beyond Borders and Labels\nThis evening blends science\, poetry\, and storytelling to explore our deepest origins and shared humanity. Tracing the cosmic formation of the elements that make our bodies\, we reflect on an ancestry older than nations\, borders\, and labels. Through verse and story\, we connect stellar history with lived experience\, inviting us to see how our many identities arise from the same ancestral matter. Together\, we explore how storytelling can soften divisions\, cross boundaries\, and remind us that we are forged from one common origin. \nRegister to attend in-person or virtual\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m. for guests attending in person\nLecture: 6 p.m.\nFollowed by a reception for in-person guests\nFree and open to the public\nParking is $11 \nPresented by the UC Santa Cruz Emeriti Association \n  \n  \n \nEnrico Ramirez-Ruiz studies some of the most powerful explosions since the birth of the universe by looking not at the heavens but at computer models. Eager to understand our origins\, he uses simulations to explore the cataclysmic death of stars that give rise to many of the elements of the periodic table. His work tests ideas at the edge of human experience\, challenging how we imagine the universe and our place within it. \n \nJasmine Schlafke\, better known by her stage name Queen Jasmeen\, is a poet\, slam coach\, diversity trainer\, and a doula from Santa Cruz\, CA. Her first book\, Crowned\, published in 2019 by Bay Company Books\, is a widely respected expression of the complexity of compounded identities\, reflecting on mental health\, race\, teen parenting\, womanhood\, ministry\, and so much more. Currently\, she works as a privately contracted poetry and performance coach and is a proud single mother of two grown children. \n

SUMMARY:Emeriti Faculty Lecture\, Spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:Puppets\, Performance\, Percussion: Asia-Pacific Interculturalism\, Avant-gardism\, and the Center for World Music\nAs the West Coast exploded with the Summer of Love and Vietnam War protests\, the Center for World Music’s concept of “bimusicality” brought Asian performance masters and American avant-gardists to train American students. Julie Taymor’s The Lion King on Broadway and Lou Harrison’s Coyote Stories are just two intercultural results. The teachings of Balasaraswati\, Ravi Shankar\, Ali Akbar Khan\, Undang Sumarna\, and Ki Tjokrowasito\, prompted intercultural revolutions in West Coast performance\, practice\, and university curriculums\, including at UC Santa Cruz. \nRegister to attend in-person or virtual\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. for guests attending in person\nLecture: 7 p.m.\nFollowed by a reception for in person guests\nFree and open to the public\nParking is $11 \nPresented by the UC Santa Cruz Emeriti Association \n  \nKathy Foley is distinguished research professor emerita at UC Santa Cruz. She is a member of honor for UNIMA-International\, joining previous puppeteers such as Jim Henson. She has edited the Asian Theatre Journal\, curated exhibits for the National Geographic Society\, and performed at Indonesian National Wayang (puppetry) Festivals\, the Asian Art Museum\, and the Smithsonian. Her research has been supported by Fulbright\, Yale Institute of Sacred Music\, and Edward A. Dickson Emeriti awards. She is also a Punch and Judy professor.

SUMMARY:History of Science Lecture with Jennifer Derr
DESCRIPTION:World Wounds: The Damming of the Nile River and the Transformation of Medicine\nThe damming of the Nile River transformed agriculture and human health in 20th-century Egypt. While dams enabled year-round irrigation and provided hydroelectricity\, the prevalence of parasitic disease also skyrocketed. Professor Derr explores the effects of damming the Nile on the health of Egyptians and the impact of large-scale environmental transformation on the knowledge and practice that made medicine during the 20th century. \nRegister to attend in-person or virtual\nIn Person Reception: 5:30 p.m.\nLecture 6 p.m.\nIn-person and virtual\nFree and open to the public\nParking is $6 \n  \nThe 2026 Nauenberg History of Science Lecture is presented by the UC Santa Cruz Emeriti Association and co-sponsored by the Center for the Middle East and North Africa\, History Department\, Humanities Division\, Environmental Studies Department\, Science and Justice Research Center\, and The Humanities Institute. \n  \n  \n \nJennifer Derr is an associate professor in the History Department at UC Santa Cruz. Her first book\, The Lived Nile: Environment\, Disease\, and Material Colonial Economy in Egypt\, won the Middle East Political Economy Book Prize. SUMMARY:The Trial of Spock—An Opera Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The creators of The Trial of Spock—An Opera In Three Acts present concert performances of five scenes from an opera-in-progress at the UC Santa Cruz Music Center Recital Hall.  \nCaptain Christopher Pike is gravely injured. Lieutenant Spock is behaving strangely. Charged with protecting Pike in his state of extreme need\,Vulcan Commodore T’or suspects that Lieutenant Spock—once Captain Pike’s science officer—is up to no good. Spock’s Captain\, James T. Kirk\, doesn’t see the trouble until far too late\, and soon Spock holds all of them prisoner aboard a ship destined for the “forbidden planet” Talos IV. He refuses to say a word about their fate—not until his superiors agree to give him his trial. Under oath\, and with strange evidence\, Spock tells the story of Captain Pike’s first visit to Talos IV\, where illusion and artificial experiences plunge Pike and fellow captive Vina into uncharted dimensions of their memories\, and their concepts of self. \nJoin sopranos Nicole Koh\, Sheila Willey\, and Emily Sinclair; tenors Alex Boyer and Nicolas Vasquez-Gerst\, baritones Joseph Calzada and Michael Kuo\, and the Del Sol Quartet\, as they distort the myth of Orpheus\, in order to re-think our presumed relationships to freedom and reality\, and its augmentations. \nMusic by Ben Leeds Carson; libretto by Perre DiCarlo & Ben Leeds Carson and Lincoln & Lee Taiz; with contributions from John de Lancie\, based on teleplays by Gene Roddenberry. \n—\nADMISSION\n– FREE and open to the public\n– Tickets required and available online through Eventbrite\n– Follow the Music Dept on Eventbrite for notices and updates.\n– Doors are scheduled to open 30 minutes prior to event start time.\n– Ticket holders not seated at least 5 minutes before the advertised start time may forfeit their ticket/seat and no refund will be issued.\n—\nPARKING\n– Parking by permit\, ParkMobile\, or $11 cash/credit via the on-site parking attendant\n– Arts Lot #126 is the closest parking lot to the event\n– Visitors with DMV placards or plates may park for free in DMV spaces\, Medical spaces\, or ParkMobile spaces without additional payment\, or in timed zones for longer than the posted time.\n– UCSC affiliates must purchase their permits before arriving at the event in order to receive their discounted UCSC rate.
