DESCRIPTION:Planting Oceania is a Oceanian/Indigenous Pacific Islander community organization that plants traditional foods in two gardens located at Filoli Historic House and Gardens in Woodside and at the UC Giltract Farms in Albany. Members of Planting Oceania will share stories about growing plants and stewarding the Land as an important cultural practice for building Oceania/Pacific Islander communities in California. SUMMARY:Reframing the STEM Classroom: Justice as Pedagogical Practice
DESCRIPTION:In this conversation\, Jabari Jones\, Emily Murai\, and Kriti Sharma reflect on their experiences integrating justice into teaching and curriculum design. They discuss why this work is critical for STEM fields and share lessons learned\, concrete approaches\, and the institutional and disciplinary transformations needed for justice to become core pedagogy across fields. \nClick here for additional details.  \n \nJabari Jones is an Assistant Professor of Earth and Oceanographic Sciences at Bowdoin College. His research is centered around the role of humans as a geologic agent on Earth and how rivers change through time. \nEmily Murai is a Lecturer in UCSC’s Environmental Studies Department and Director of the Emerging Leaders Fellowship program at the Center for Reimagining Leadership. She explores interdisciplinary writing\, critical environmentalism\, and belonging in higher education. \nKriti Sharma is an Associate Professor of Critical Race Science & Technology Studies and Climate Justice Fellow with the Center for Reimagining Leadership at UCSC. Through this campaign\, we aspire to amplify the tribe's rewilding efforts\, support the sustainability of their buffalo program\, and convey the critical message of living in harmony with animals and the land.\nThe narrative of the Blackfeet and bison is intertwined with themes of survival\, resilience\, and rebirth. These majestic creatures are integral to every face of the Blackfeet culture\, playing a vital role in ceremonies and symbolizing the community's cultural\, spiritual\, and economic healing. The recent release of the Elk Island Herd into the wild marks a significant step in this journey\, despite the numerous challenges encountered along the way.\n
