ECE 290 Seminar: “Enhancing Spectrum Utilization Through Measurement Science”

Presented by: Adam Wunderlich, Group Leader of Applied Systems Metrology @ NIST
Description: As modern wireless networks crowd into shared and congested radio frequency (RF) bands, traditional spectrum engineering faces escalating challenges with coexistence and interference mitigation. Measurement science plays a key role in advancing technologies and shaping policies that ensure the spectrum is used effectively. This talk will provide an overview of these challenges and present selected examples of research from NIST characterizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), “closed-box” RF communication systems operating in complex spectrum environments.
Bio: Adam Wunderlich leads the Applied Systems Metrology Group in the Communications Technology Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado. Since joining NIST in 2015, his research has combined applied statistics, signal processing, and machine learning to advance radio spectrum measurements and electromagnetic interference testing. Dr. Wunderlich has received the NIST Allen V. Astin Measurement Science Award, as well as multiple Department of Commerce medals, including the Gold Medal in 2017 and Bronze Medals in 2020 and 2022.
